Special Thanks to the Westside Children's Center and the DCFS
We're very grateful to them for their support of our Create Now Talent Show on August 11th, and all of our other programs that they have funded. The kids who participate in our projects are loving them! |

Compton Kids Paint for Conservation
Thanks to a grant from Edison International, this summer around 25 children at Roy Campanella Park in Compton have been designing and painting a mural through our Create A Mural Now workshop.
This project is focused on the theme of Conservation and the name of their mural is "Eat What You Grow. Grow What You Eat." Our mentor, Carlos Spivey, has been teaching the kids every week since June 23rd about color wheels, blending paints and special art techniques.
Kaitilin, age 8 said, "My favorite part about this class is painting. I learned how to make lighter colors from just one!"
Christian, age 9, said, "I paint at home now. I paint pictures of myself and it keeps me busy so that I don't get into trouble"
The Manager of Roy Campanella Park, Craig Newman said, "The kids really, really, really, reaaaaallly like the workshop. Carlos teaches them things like the history of art, culture, techniques and proper terms. They are learning so much and don't even realize it. We really appreciate this program. Thank You!"
Please come join us for the unveiling of the mural, which will take place on August 30th at 3:00 pm. As always, we will throw the kids a party to celebrate. Each child will receive a gift bag with all kinds of goodies and lasting souvenirs to remind them to create now.

Talent Show a Big Success!
The Create Now Talent Show that was sponsored by Westside Children's Center and the DCFS on August 11th at the Westside Pavilion mall gave 18 gifted children and youth the chance to Show Off their skills.
For most of the kids, it was the first time they got to perform in public, experiencing butterflies of excitement as they shared their unique talents with the crowd. Our M.C., Ashley Jones ("2012 Mrs. California USA"), did a spectacular job of hosting the event.
Melani Jana, mother of 10 year-old Makoa who calls himself "The Next Justin Bieber," said, "Thank you for giving my son the opportunity to perform! It was a great experience for both of us. My mom and I walked away from the experience wanting to possibly mentor next summer."
Another mother, Belinda Foster remarked, "It's always been Giavanna's goal to perform for people. The Talent Show was phenomenal and my daughter got to shine while fulfilling her life goal. Thank you!"
Jolie Laurent at Westside Children's Center said, "Create Now has been a solid partner of Westside Children's Center in bringing more arts programs to our community. It's been a great partnership and we look forward to continuing this great collaboration!"
At the end of the Talent Show, all 18 performers came on the stage for their final applause. They each received a colorful basket filled with all kinds of goodies. We're also giving every child a DVD of the entire show so they can have a lasting souvenir to share with others.

Thanks to Edison International
Edison International is a generator and distributor of electric power and an investor in infrastructure and energy assets, including renewable energy. They realize that the most important investment is in our children, because they represent our future! Thanks to Edison's support, Create Now was able to provide our Create A Mural Now program to at-risk youth in Compton. These kids are learning how to "Eat What You Grow. Grow What You Eat," so they can make healthy changes in their bodies -- and also our environment. |
Staff Changes Camille Brown has been serving as our AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer Coordinator for the past year. She has been a tremendous asset to Create Now, but sadly her term has come to an end. We wish her all the best in her new ventures.
We're also delighted to report that our former VISTA Development Assistant Laura Kelly is returning for another year on September 17th when she will take over as the Volunteer Coordinator. We're very excited to have her back!
