Exploring Life Through Writing
Create Now has been bringing our program s to Children's Institute, Inc. (CII) for over 11 years. As a result, CII has hired us to provide a Magazine Workshop for their youth: children who have been affected by community violence.
Our mentor Justine Cogan, who is a professional writer, is teaching more than a dozen middle school children ages 11-15 how to write their own stories that will be published as a magazine, which everyone can share at the new CII headquarters: Otis Booth Campus in Echo Park/Ramparts. This center is a safe haven that serves 5,000 children and families in one of L.A.'s most challenged neighborhoods.
Justine said, "Storytelling is a great exercise at this age because it gives young people a chance to flex their muscles and control a story."
The kids have goals and they're enjoying the writing workshop. "I would like to write amazing stories," said Samantha. "I want to write better," remarked Francisco. Argelis Ortiz, Director of Youth Programs said, "In this creative writing course, one of our youth has begun to flourish and her creativity has come out since day one. Because of this example, we take joy in partnering with agencies like Create Now." On August 31st, the kids will get to recite their stories and see them displayed on posters. We will celebrate with a party and gift bags when they share their special magazine with everyone at CII, including families, friends and peers, as they learn how to Write Now. Read more |
Exploring Life Through Painting
David Aswad is an artist who wanted to give back to his community. Create Now referred him to L.A. Family Housing in North Hollywood, where for the past three months he has been teaching a popular Painting Workshop to homeless children and their parents at this large shelter.
I can see these kids have lacked any kind of formal discipline in their lives and I wanted to give them some structure. They really welcome it! I am truly amazed at how hard working and devoted some of them are when they paint."
Z'land, age 8 said, "My mom painted a beautiful picture of me and it's hanging over my bed," Her mother Bobbi remarked, "These art classes brought my daughter and me together."
LAFH Program Coordinator Christian Burell said, "The kids are timid and don't think they're capable, but when they saw their paintings in the Art Show, it made their minds more open and positive. This class has made them willing to change. It's amazing!"
