Create Now is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1996. Our mission is to transform the lives of high-risk and at-risk youth through creative arts mentoring, education, resources and opportunities. The organization serves kids who have been abused, neglected, abandoned and orphaned, are left homeless, runaways, teen parents, victims of domestic violence, children of prisoners, substance abusers, gang members or incarcerated. In the past fourteen years, we've reached over 25,000 of these vulnerable kids through our unique arts mentoring and cultural programs and services.

Growing Kids Through Art

Ronda Rhoads and Launa Bacon voluntDrawing Hillsideseer to teach an Introduction to Art workshop at the group home Hillsides in Pasadena, a safe haven for around 100 foster children ages 6-18 who have been removed from their families because of abuse and neglect.

Some of the arts projects include collages and decorating cigar boxes to hold their treasures, since many of these kids are shuffled from group homes to foster families. One fun workshop engaged the youth in planting seeds of flowers and vegetables, which they also drew and painted on paper. After staking their place in the garden, the children painted their pots. Through arts mentoring, we are planting seeds in our children that can grow into strong people with confidence, flourishing careers and healthy lives.

16 year-old "Emerald" said, "It makes me so proud of my work that I actually finished something."

Hillsides Art Director Kim Ha said, "`When at-risk youth are given the chance to create without boundaries, they are able to deal with pain, grief, sadness, and trauma in an expressive context. CrPlanting seedseate Now has been very supportive and our children enjoy their program thoroughly."

We hope that you'll nurture Create Now's garden by contributing seed money so we can maintain and expand our programs. Your $100 will provide art supplies for twenty troubled youth. Our children appreciate your support.

Art Works!

Create Now belongs to several coalitions, including Art Works! in Pasadena. Our collaboration is based on a partnership hub of the Flintridge Foundation, the Armory Center for the Arts and Learning Works! Charter School. A number of artists and organizations have come together to offer at-risk youth in the Pasadena, Altadena and Sierra Madre area the opportunity to learn a variety of different arts.

Graphic Design RosemarysOur mentor Julie Shin is teaching a Graphic Design Workshop to some foster girls from Rosemary's Children's Center. Their Volunteer Coordinator Colleen Turkal said, "The girls that attend this workshop LOVE IT! They really look forward to the classes." Julie works for an advertising agency in Pasadena and as her students progress, she hopes to offer them internships with her company.
