Locked-Up Girls Inspired To Write
Penny Stein is a freelance writer who recently taught a Creative Writing workshop at Camp Scott in Saugus as part of our Write Now literacy program, thanks to a generous donation from Oprah's Angel Network. Penny helped some of the girls at this detention facility to create their own newsletter.
"I had a driving pull to help these abandoned, abused and thrown- away girls," said Penny. "I feel honored to have shared these girls' life experiences and to play a role in their growth."
The newsletter was filled with essays, poems and puzzles that the girls created, which focused on the challenges they faced. Each week, a different topic was presented. The newsletter was distributed to everyone at the camp. Cheryl Jackson, Camp Scott Director said, "Our youth continue to express their gratitude for the direction, guidance and support that Penny gave them in creating the first Camp Scott newsletter."
For the culminating event, the girls displayed enlarged pages of their newsletter, then read their writing out loud to a select group of girls. This helped build their literacy skills. Create Now also gave them a pizza party with gift bags of unique souvenirs and Certificates of Completion.
"I've learned better writing skills," said Cortny. "Ms. Stein always encourages us to write how we feel and not to be ashamed... "
The girls begged Penny to return, so she will continue helping them to create bi-monthly newsletters, as they all learn to Create Now.

Thanks to the L.A. County Arts Commission
We would like to extend our deep appreciation to the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, which has generously provided Create Now with another grant towards operating expenses. Since 2006, we have been honored to be grantees of the LACAC. Thanks to their support, each year thousands of the most vulnerable kids in the region enjoy art, music, writing, dance, theatre and cultural excursions.
