Create Now is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1996. Our mission is to transform the lives of high-risk and at-risk youth through creative arts mentoring, education, resources and opportunities. The organization serves kids who have been abused, neglected, abandoned and orphaned (foster youth), are left homeless, runaways, teen parents, victims of domestic violence, children of prisoners, substance abusers, gang members or incarcerated. In the past fourteen years, we've reached over 20,000 of these vulnerable kids through our unique arts mentoring and cultural programs and services.

Belfast Journey Create Now is honored to have been selected by the British Council and VSO to participate in the first-ever multilateral Global Xchange, which connects youth and community leaders from six countries: France, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, UK and USA. Executive Director Jill Gurr spent three weeks in South Africa in January 2010, along with other U.S. reps from LA's BEST, REACH LA and Street Poets.
In January, Jill lived in Belfast, North Ireland for three weeks, with all the GX team sharing more best practices. They worked with local kids making art and musical instruments, as well as marched in the St. Patrick's Day Parade.
She and her GX partner Rafiki worked with Forthspring, an agency that builds trust in a community where the Protestants and Catholics have been at war for centuries. Just like gang warfare in L.A., the hatred is about turf and retaliation, mixed with religious intolerance and many other factors.
Jill said, "When I went out on patrol one night with the Detached Youth unit, we met kids from both sides who were fascinated by the East Coast-West Coast hip hop rivalry between Tupac and Biggie. All over the world, the arts are a powerful way to get troubled youth to come together so they can start to heal."

Incarcerated Girls Find Relief Through Introduction to Art Workshop
For the second year, Create Now is providing an Introduction to Art Workshop at Camp Scott in Saugus. Teenage girls who are locked up for different crimes are learning how to draw, paint, sculpt, and then design an art exhibition for all 100 residents at the detention camp, as well as probation officers and other staff.
Ebonee said, "We get to try new things. It made me feel free and like an artist."
Our evaluation of this program showed that 71% of the students had an increase on the self-esteem scale. Staff have noticed great changes in the girls' attitudes and behavior after participating in our workshops.
Camp Scott Director Cheryl Jackson said, "The pride and confidence demonstrated by the girls as a direct result of
the artwork that they have created has had a profound effect on the
pro-social elements within the Camp. Create Now is a significant instrument in the development of young ladies who are learning to be contributing and socially responsible members of society."

Thanks to the Wells Fargo Foundation
For the fourth straight year, the Wells Farg o Foundation has provided support to Create Now. We would like to thank them for their most recent contribution toward our general operating expenses. It's partners like the Wells Fargo Foundation that enable us to provide therapeutic creative arts programs to the most vulnerable children in our community. We greatly appreciate their support! |
Thank you!
Thanks to you, Create Now programs prove that the arts can impact the lives of high-risk and at-risk
youth in ways that other intervention programs cannot.
Working together, we are transforming lives through creative arts!
Sincerely,
The Create Now Team
