  • The Committee on Aging will sponsor the 2012 Fall Camp at Shrine Mont October 22-25, with keynote speaker Philip Gulley; chaplain the Rt. Rev. Holly Hollerith; and singer/storyteller Ed Kilbourne. Learn more and download a registration form.  
  • The Committee on Race Relations will sponsor a "Seeing the Face of God in Each Other" anti-racism workshop October 26-27 at Christ Church, Glen Allen. Participation in this workshop satisfies the requirement that prospective transitional and vocational deacons attend an anti-racism workshop as a prerequisite to ordination.   • Bishop Goff will receive Natividad Menjivar as a priest in the Episcopal Church on Saturday, September 29 at 7 p.m. at St. Timothy's, Herndon. All are welcome to join in the celebration.  
  • The Bishop's Fall Clergy Retreat will take place October 15-17 at Shrine Mont. Joining participants as speaker will be Suzanne Farnham, co-author of the book Keeping in Tune with God: Listening Hearts Discernment for Clergy. Learn more and register now!  
  • "Educating People of Faith: Personal Choices, Agricultural Sustainability and the 21st Century Challenge of World Hunger," a comprehensive conference on food resources in Virginia and the globe, is set for Saturday, September 29, at St. Stephen's, Richmond.   
  • The Treasurer's Office is pleased to announce that a one-day Treasurer's Conference has been scheduled for October 25, 2012.  The event will be held at Christ Church, Spotsylvania.  Details and registration forms should be available shortly.

  • The Leadership Program for Musicians (LPM), a continuing education program in church music, worship, and liturgy, begins its 2012-2013 season September 14-15 at Church of the Holy Comforter, Richmond. Students will meet monthly for five months on one Friday night and all day Saturday to complete courses offered this year on Leading Congregational Song, Resources for an Effective Music Ministry, Philosophy, and Hymnody of the Christian Church.   •  Westminster Canterbury, Richmond invites clergy and lay congregational ministers to a seminary, "When Words Fail: Practical Ministry to Pepole with Dementia," September 27, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The seminary will highlight the physiological, emotional and spiritual effects of dementia.   • Clergy/counselor certification training for the Prepare-Enrich marriage/relationship program will take place October 11 at the Richmond District United Methodist Virginia Conference Office. Learn more.   
  • This September, the Episcopal Church Foundation will offer a series of Web conferences. All conferences are offered at no charge, and you may sign up for as many as you like. Register online for the following:

Women to Women:
Virginia to the Congo


A team from the Diocese of Virginia recently visited the Diocese of Bukavu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Many of the people of Bukavu are suffering from horrific acts perpetrated by armed rebel groups. The difficulties fall disproportionally on the women of the diocese. In fact, this area is often called "the rape capital of the world."

The women of the Mothers Union of the Diocese of Bukavu are responding through programs to assist women in need. For example, we visited two "orphan vocational training centers" where young women (in their early teens) who had been raped and had had their parents killed by rebels were being taught to be seamstresses. In this way, the church is providing love and hope.

We are forming a ministry between women in the Diocese of Virginia and the women of the Diocese of Bukavu. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Carey Chirico of St. George's, Fredericksburg:
