Diocesan Events
  • The Committee on Aging will sponsor the 2012 Fall Camp at Shrine Mont October 22-25, with keynote speaker Philip Gulley; chaplain the Rt. Rev. Holly Hollerith; and singer/storyteller Ed Kilbourne. Learn more and download a registration form.  
  • The Committee on Race Relations will sponsor a "Seeing the Face of God in Each Other" anti-racism workshop October 26-27 at Christ Church, Glen Allen. Participation in this workshop satisfies the requirement that prospective transitional and vocational deacons attend an anti-racism workshop as a prerequisite to ordination.The workshop is also a timely professional development opportunity for Christian education and program directors in this age of increasing social polarization due to both racism and other-ism.   • Bishop Goff will receive Natividad Menjivar as a priest in the Episcopal Church on Saturday, September 29 at 7 p.m. at St. Timothy's, Herndon. All are welcome to join in the celebration.  
  • The Bishop's Fall Clergy Retreat will take place October 15-17 at Shrine Mont. Joining participants as speaker will be Suzanne Farnham, co-author of the book Keeping in Tune with God: Listening Hearts Discernment for Clergy. Learn more and register now!  
  • "Educating People of Faith: Personal Choices, Agricultural Sustainability and the 21st Century Challenge of World Hunger," a comprehensive conference on food resources in Virginia and the globe, is set for Saturday, September 29, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 6000 Grove Avenue, Richmond.  The event, jointly sponsored by the Stewardship of Creation Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia and the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church, will include discussions on key issues involving food availability in Virginia and globally. Register online.   
  • The Treasurer's Office is pleased to announce that a one-day Treasurer's Conference has been scheduled for October 25, 2012.  The event will be held at Christ Church, Spotsylvania.  Details and registration forms should be available shortly.

  • Join Bishop Jones at Shrine Mont September 9 & 10 for some good food and golf at the 14th Tee with the Bishop Golf tournament.  Learn more and reserve your spot!  
  • The Leadership Program for Musicians (LPM), a continuing education program in church music, worship, and liturgy, begins its 2012-2013 season September 14-15 at Church of the Holy Comforter, Richmond. Students will meet monthly for five months on one Friday night and all day Saturday to complete courses offered this year on Leading Congregational Song, Resources for an Effective Music Ministry, Philosophy, and Hymnody of the Christian Church.   •  Westminster Canterbury, Richmond invites clergy and lay congregational ministers to a seminary, "When Words Fail: Practical Ministry to Pepole with Dementia," September 27, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The seminary will highlight the physiological, emotional and spiritual effects of dementia. Celebrating the Past and the Future: 50 Years of Diocesan Camps at Shrine Mont

Since 1962, diocesan camps at Shrine Mont have grown from serving handfuls of campers to over 700 of God's children. This year, celebrate the 50th anniversary of the camps and take time to take a look at their next 50 years. 

In September and October, the people of the Diocese and friends of the camps will gather to talk about the camps of the future.  Plan to be a part of how the Diocese and Shrine Mont can best serve our campers by attending one of these events:

September 6; St. James', Leesburg; 7-8:30 p.m.

September 11;  Emmanuel, Harrisonburg; 6:30-8 p.m.

I Can't Remember It Because I Never Knew It

Recently the Rev. John Ohmer, former rector of St. James', Leesburg, asked that his parting gift be donations of food for the hungry.  The congregation donated enough food for over 6,405 meals in their former rector's honor.
