Kony 2012 and the Diocese of Virginia

If you follow social media at all, you've now doubt seen the YouTube video Kony 2012. This film describes the horrific terror created over the last 26 years by Joseph Kony and the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). The LRA started in Uganda and has since moved west where it now operates in and out of South Sudan, DR Congo and the Central African Republic.

Kony 2012 can only be described as a phenomenon. In just a couple of weeks, the site has been viewed by tens of missions of people. Groups around the world are clamoring to join the movement to combat the LRA by bringing focus to Kony's actions, and ultimately bringing him to justice. A few weeks ago, almost no one had heard of Joseph Kony and the LRA. Now they are front page news.

But they are not news to the Diocese of Virginia. For five years, churches and individuals in the Diocese of Virginia have helped communities in South Sudan recover from attacks from the LRA. We've visited villagers forced to flee their homes and we've provided food relief. Longer term efforts include helping support teachers in Ibba, a diocese that was attacked several times by the LRA. A major effort is underway to build a brick cathedral in the Diocese of Ezo, a project that has needed to pause from time to time because of fear of LRA raids. And we've recently established connections with the Church in the DR Congo, also impacted by Kony and the LRA.

So if you watch the video and want to help, great. But remember you can do more than put up posters. You can help by becoming partners with the communities impacted by Kony's terror in South Sudan and the DR Congo. For more information, please e-mail Buck Blanchard at bblanchard@thediocese.net.
