Need to Know

The new Title IV canons (Ecclesiastical Disciple) go into effect on July 1, 2011. These new canons  provide a discernment process designed to help the Church address serious misconduct by its ordained leaders. Lay persons and clergy are needed to serve as Investigators, Advisors, Conciliators and Pastoral Care Team Members.  You may nominate yourself or someone else for one of the roles by using the Application Form. Training will be provided for those who serve in any of these roles.  A brief summary of the new Title IV and a flow chart of how it works are available.

In conjunction with the new Canons, expanded and revised requirements for training for the Prevention of Sexual Misconduct also go into effect.

As of July 1, everyone who applies for a new license as a Eucharistic Visitors (those who take communion to people in their homes, in hospitals or in nursing home) will be required to complete 90 minutes of training in the prevention of adult sexual misconduct and the recognition and reporting of elder abuse.  Currently licensed Eucharistic Visitors are encouraged to complete this training, and will be required to complete it before renewing their licenses. This is intended to help protect both visitors and those whom they visit.  View scheduled trainings. Once a member of a congregation receives the training, he or she could be eligible to train others in the parish.  Contact the Rev. Cathy Tibbetts for details.

As of July 1, all misconduct prevention training will be valid for 10 years.  Clergy and laity who have taken misconduct prevention training more than 10 years ago (before July 1, 2001) will be required to complete 90 minutes of refresher training.  Much has changed in 10 years and a renewed focus on the protection and safety of all people in the church will strengthen ministry.

Remember that all who participate in mission trips are required to complete training in the prevention of misconduct. Complete guidelines are available online.

  Building Partnerships with Southern Sudan

As southern Sudan moves forward with the formation of a new nation following January's referendum vote, the American Friends of the Episcopal Church of Sudan will meet in Richmond June 17-19 to learn about the challenges and opportunities for American partnerships. AFRECS is a network that raises awareness and support for the people and the Church of southern Sudan. Bishop Jones is president of the board.

Joining attendees will be the Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church, who will preside at the 10:45 a.m. Eucharist on Sunday, June 19 at Christ Church, Glen Allen, this year's host for the annual event. Participants will also spend time engaging in conversations on peace building, the economic and social infrastructure and advocacy opportunities.
