Need to Know
  • Have you shared your views with the Nominating Committee for Bishop Suffragan? We invite every member of the Diocese to participate in this important survey by May 26. Churches, please include this bulletin insert in your upcoming publications to encourage your parishioners to take part. Visit the Bishop Suffragan Search Process Site for more information and a timeline for the process.
  • Churches, institutions and organizations of the Diocese are invited to participate in a special Disaster Response & Preparedness Survey that will help the diocesan Disaster Preparedness Ministry Team develop policies and procedures to contribute to the health and strength of our diocese.  
  • The diocesan Committee on Mental Health recently hosted a workshop on post-traumatic stress disorder. Read a summary and view pictures from the event on the Committee Web site.
  • Prayers for May Mission Trips: St. George's, Fredericksburg has two groups taking mission trips in May - Fourth and Fifth graders will be going to Richmond to the William Byrd House to plant at Three Sister's Garden May 20-22; the young adult group will be taking a trip to Ohio to work at Good Earth Farm May 27 - June 3.
Diocesan Events
  • The Episcopal Church Women Spring Board Meeting will take place Thursday, May 19 at Christ Church, Spotsylvania under the theme "From Dreams to Call: Embracing Our Journey with Joy." Featuring lunch, Eucharist and small-group workshops. Learn more
  • Frances Caldwell, diocesan director of Development & Stewardship, will host two free Planned Giving Workshops: on May 12 at the diocesan offices at Mayo Memorial Church House and on May 19 at Immanuel Church-on-the-Hill, Alexandria, both from 7-9 p.m. Contact Frances to RSVP. 
  • The Celebration of Longevity will take place May 12 at Westminster-Canterbury, Richmond, and will honor those celebrating birthdays of 90 years or more in 2011. All are welcome. Eucharist with Bishop Gulick followed by reception.
  • An orientation session for clergy new to the Diocese of Virginia will take place May 10 at the diocesan headquarters at May Memorial Church House.

Other Events
  • The Cathedral of the Incarnation, Baltimore will host a Preaching and Worship Institute August 17-19 with Dr. Alexander Shaia, exploring Mark's spirituality, preaching Mark through the lectionary and more. More info online. Register by June 1.

Summer Camp: Spots Available, Nurses Needed! 

Make plans now for summer 2011! Spots are still available at most Shrine Mont Camps. From music and drama to art and sports, there's a camp for everyone - including one for the whole family. Visit camps.thediocese.net to learn more or register online.
  
Shrine Mont is seeking nurses to work at Shrine Mont this summer and provide health care to campers. Nurses are paid $100/day plus room and board, with spots available July 21-July 30 and August 2-13. Please contact Paris Ball if you're interested in serving as a nurse at Shrine Mont this summer.

What is your church planning for mission and outreach in 2011? Contact Mary Anne Bryant in the Office of Mission & Outreach to share information about your mission trip, or to inquire about participating in other churches' or regions' upcoming mission trips. The Committee on World Mission has grant funding up to $500 for mission trips.  You can find the application for here.
