For as long as I can remember I was always absolutely fascinated with guns. It most likely started when I saw my father and my uncle getting ready for a hunting trip or a day in the field. I wanted to go along! I never cared about what they were hunting or where. I didn't care about the
weather rain or shine, cold or freezing, it didn't matter I wanted to be out there. And more than anything I wanted to carry a gun! That was the ultimate symbol of maturity to me. In my teenage years I learned about the US Constitution and in particular the Second Amendment. I didn't learn about it in school, I had to learn about it "on the street" so to speak.
Growing up in New York we had to put up with a lot of firearms restrictions. At 21 I was denied a handgun license because of a less than stellar driving record. Even though I had no outstanding traffic tickets at the time, I was still denied a hangdgun license. That was when I decided two things: 1) I was going to spend my life fighting against gun control 2) I was leaving New York to live in a place where a law abiding citizen can own guns.
After many years of fighting this war on a number of fronts I honestly never thought we would see what we saw last week. I always hoped we would. But I never thought I would live to see the US Supreme Court unequivocally uphold the INDIVIDUAL right to keep and bear arms.
As we begin this Independence Day weekend make no mistake the world is now a different place. This important ruling has completely changed the battlefield. The fight is by no means over, on the contrary is has just begun. This ruling has set the stage with a strong foundation to continue the fight. The battle will entail years of litigation, in jurisdictions across the country. That being said this is a MONUMENTAL victory! Instead of the fight being about whether or not we can own guns for self defense, hunting or recreation the battle will now be about which guns and under what circumstances we will own, carry, and trade in guns. So as you celebrate Independence Day remember those who came before us who fought to assure that our children and grandchildren will live in a free society that allows them the means to defend themsleves and to take to the hunting fields we all so dearly love. - TJR
