Creative Literacy

September 22, 2009
Greetings!

So much going on ......... I hardly know where to start!

Dreams and paintings with dissolving mountains AND something I have always wanted to do is suddenly at my finger tips.

The funny part is that last week I went out to the storage trailer to find something. I don't even remember what I was looking for. I came back with two canvases which I had rescued from the humidity and mildew. I thew them aside in the studio.

Several days later, I glanced at one of them and realized that the mountain in the painting was dissolving!  The painting and the story about it are the subject of this week's issue.

Enjoy!

Magic Mountain
A Painting, a Dream & a Dissolving Mountain
Magic Mountain, oil
Magic Mountain, oil on canvas, $800

Inspired by a painting trip in the White Mountains, I made this oil painting recently from a plein air pastel I did several years ago. This painting is especially intriguing to me today as I am preparing to return to the White Mountains again this week on a hiking trip with my son.

In contrast to the coastal marshes I paint near my home, Magic Mountain continues to draw me in a timeless way ~ as if the imagery is filled with the haunting intrigue of a past life or dream world.

The coastal marshes too, have taken on that dream-like quality of a lost lifetime begging me to revisit and put some part of my soul to rest. Waiting for Spring (below) is filled with the peace and restfulness of my dream of connecting with whatever it is I am looking for when I feel so drawn to paint on this stretch of the beach again and again.

To many who comment on my paintings, their differences are noted. I, however, see only the similarities of the constant search for my Creative soul ~ as if somehow scratching them out on canvas will make my dream real and quell my thirst for peace.

Indeed, I was looking for something last week in my dream journal when I ran across the same dissolving mountain .....

Dream: I am repainting a landscape, moving mountains, to the core~ I am making carrot juice, mixing it in with a cocktail of other juices. There is one landscape I am especially interested in. I dig deep to cut it loose from its underpinings. It begins to, to move slightly.

These paintings and others are on view at AZ Fine Art Gallery, Wellesley Hills, MA through November.

KINDRED GARDENS COLLECTION
A Dream to Comes to Life

At the Stream, natural slate tileIn the last issue of D'Muse I asked the question, "What would happen if you could create the world you live in with the stroke of a pen or a brush load of paint?" This week I find myself walking in that dream.

Finishing up work on my Kindred Gardens Paintings, I see my vision from five years ago of a collection of paintings that could bring the protected landscapes into the daily lives of people everywhere ~ quickly becoming real.

The collection of 30 original oil paintings is scheduled to be unveiled at The Williamsburg Land Conservancy's first ever Adopt-an-Easement Dinner on October 22. Ten fabulous amenity packages including  five-star accommodations at Wedmore Place and The Colonial Williamsburg Inn, mouth-watering dinners at some of the best restaurants in the area, a flyover of protected landscapes, rounds of golf at Ford's Colony and much, much more ~ ART! Every amenity package being auctioned includes a year-long adoption of your choice of one of my paintings from the collection! Of course, all the paintings will be for sale at the dinner ~ and 30% will go to The Conservancy.

Deer carries the message of purity of purpose; of walking in the light to dispel shadows. ...
Nothing can cause deer to change its path.

The Raven, natural slate tile
It has also been my dream to create a wholesale business which will help The Conservancy do what it does best ~ continue working with land owners of beautiful and significant landscapes to protect the earth for us and our children. In the last five years, The Conservancy has helped protect thousands of acres. And as I have walked each protected property, I see ten times that amount of land held by the same land owners ~ being cared for with the same respect and stewardship.

Now the recession has threatened The Conservancy's existence. So I am especially grateful ~ to see THIS part of my dream also coming true NOW!

Sustainability is critical. So, I have designed a collection of decorative natural slate tiles with imagery from my paintings. Twenty of these 12" square tiles are available on www.kindredgardens.org for $85 each. $40 of each sale goes to The Conservancy! Included are images from the Virginia Capitol Trail, Ford's Colony, Colonial Williamsburg, Greenswamp Farm, The Williamsburg Winery, Uncle's Neck on the Chicahominy, York River Preserve, Bethel Beach Preserve, Assateague National Seashore, Cape Cod National Seashore and the White Mountains in New Hampshire.

You can help by spreading the word. You will find a Share Link at the bottom of each page of tiles. Simply click on it to post it to your Facebook, email it, Stumble, Digg, any social networking site
OR link to it from your blog or website. . . . Together we can take care of the earth.

Pictured above right: The Raven, 12" square slate tile, $85.
The raven is a symbol of creativity, magic and healing.
Raven is mankind's protector and sometimes savior.
He brought light and fire to the early people so they would not die. He gave them salmon so they wouldn't starve. He brought water to break a terrible drought. He is a cultural hero.

If you would like to attend the unveiling of the oil paintings at the Adopt-an-Easement Dinner, call me (804-725-1183 or 804-366-0990) or email me and I will mail you an invitation. The Reception is being held at Wedmore Place and the Dinner in Wessex Hall at The Williamsburg Winery. If you are coming from out of town, accommodations are available at Wedmore place.

RESTAURANT REVIEW
The White Dog Inn

White Dog Dining Room
Jim and I took Patrick and Meg, my son and daughter-in-law to dinner at The White Dog last Saturday. Wow! What a great evening!

I had had several wonderful lunches with my girlfriends; great crab cakes, tasty shrimp burgers, Mary LOVED the Pepper Pot Soup! Dinner, however, was off the charts!

I had the duck ~ the best I've ever had! Tender, moist, not a bit fatty. The roasted, stuffed apple and home made succotash was to die for. Meg loved her halibut. Pat, of course, had the Crab Norfolk and Jim had the Chicken Provencal. We all tasted each other's dinner entrees, then quickly coveted our own!

Missy waited on us and she did a fabulous job! It's really great when your server has time to be personal ~ even when she's really busy! The only bad thing about the whole experience is that we didn't have room left for dessert! The Chocolate Bread Pudding sounded decadent! And the Apple Almond Tart and Blueberry Cobbler would have made it hard to choose.

I will have to go back for dessert and coffee!
Hope to see you there...
