Greetings!
My shows at Wedmore Place in Williamsburg and The White Dog Inn in Mathews County are open! I have begun painting for a new Conservation Collection. The story of my first plein air painting session last night is featured in this issue along with a bit about my vision for the collection. So many have expressed interest in a painting lesson, I have included my sketches and working notes on two of this week's articles. Let me know if they are helpful to you. Your questions are a great source of topics for next week's articles! In conjunction with my exhibits at the inns, I will be giving several Dinner with the Muse talks. If you are interested in having one for your group, small or large, please call me at the studio 804-725-1183 or on my cell 804-366-0990.
Have a Happy 4th!

How to Select a Subject
3 Steps to a Good Composition PAINTING LESSON In the process of painting Song of the Robin,
I let Mother Nature work her magic on me. Initially, there were many
things which attracted my eye to this subject. I will show you how I
worked through a simple process to discover the painting.
1. Ask yourself a key question. What is it which is attracting your eye and KEEPING your attention?
You
can see from the photo of the garden, there is lots going on here. In
addition to the obvious; two stunning hydrangeas, two sculptural crepe
myrtles, the iron gate, daylilies and pathway ~ each time the sun came
out from behind the cloud, everything changed! To create a painting
from all this inspiration ~ I would have to be selective. "What is it
which is attracting your eye and KEEPING your attention," I asked
myself. See my sketches, what this garden actually looked like and how I selected this view for my painting.

| Allie's Gift Paintings from the my Daily Painting Journal & Book @ THE GALLERY AT WEDMORE PLACE
On view through July 31 The impact which my story about painting Allie has had seems to keep growing. Many people have written to me saying how much it meant to them. I have collected this and several of the stories, paintings and sketches related to it together in a book. The paintings of this collection are on view at Wedmore Place in Williamsburg, Virginia through the end of this month.
Allie's Gift Our connection to animals is extraordinary. Allie awakened me in a way
I never could have imagined. This is the story of how painting her
portrait on the day she died changed everything. Allie, of course,
lives on now forever in this exquisite little book and in the hearts
and minds of all who share it READ AN EXCERPT>

Island in the Sun Featured at The White Dog Inn
Inspired by a whole year of plein air painting in my Mathews, Virginia home; my new collection, Right in My Own Back Yard, opens today at The White Dog Inn in Mathews.
Each
painting portrays a different location in Mathews, painted at a
particular time of day and day of the year. The Collection includes
views of Bethel Beach, Chapel Creek, Haven Beach, Misty Cove, New
Point, Put In Creek and more. See more paintings from the show.
Pictured: top, Island in the Sun, Betel Beach, $1500.; Bottom, Tide Coming In, oil, Bethel Beach, $500.
When my good friends Tammye and Cort Van Cleif invited me to show my paintings at their White Dog Inn, I didn't hesitate for a minute. Tammye is a fabulous interior designer and well-skilled at making everyone feel at home. I knew everything would be first class ~ the look, the food and most especially the hospitality! And I was right!
The main dining room opens tonight for dinner. The menu spans from meatloaf to crab norfolk, so there's something for everyone's taste and pocketbook. They have a wonderfully festive deck with spunky blue umbrella tables. I wish I could say I am going to dinner there this weekend, but alas I will have to wait until next week as I am visiting family out of town. You can be sure I will be first in line next week. I hope to see you there!
The White Dog Inn is open for dinner Wednesday through Saturday. Reservations are accepted. 804-725-7680 68 Church Street, Mathews, Virginia
The Coffee Bistro at The White Dog is open Monday through Friday from 7 to 11.

Twilight Winery
Going with the Flow ~ Even when it Feels Like the Flow ISN'T Going! THE CONSERVATION COLLECTION
I have had this vision of The Winery in my mind's eye for some time
now ~ at least a year or two! I had taken photos, but I didn't want to
rely on painting from them. Somehow being there is so much more
powerful. Last night proved me right about that.
This is not exactly
what I had envisioned ... in many ways it is so much more!
I had
had a very busy day; a list of thing to do, paintings to deliver,
install, wet paintings, damaged one in the process, a meeting in
Williamsburg, finish making prints, load the van with paintings, unload
paintings, load painting gear... Finally, it was 5:30 and it was time to
paint. The sun was still high and very hot. I scouted for a place that
would be cool. None to be found.
I wanted to get started on my
new Conservation Collection. I have had this vision of the earth in
my mind's eye for nearly five years ~ This vision of how truly stunning and important the earth is for all of us. Now it was finally time to start. See sketches and learn more about how this painting was created.>
