Greetings!
Lots going on. It's hard to tell whether to paint or write! I have so many new paintings ... and it takes a bit to step back from the easel before I can see them in a way which allows me to write about them.
I think you will enjoy the ones in this week's D'Muse. I hope they will help you see how your innate Creative is already working!
In addition to painting and writing, I am installing two very special exhibits. In the next few weeks, I will be opening shows at Wedmore Place in Williamsburg, VA and The White Dog Inn in Mathews County, Va. In conjunction with these, I will be giving several Dinner with the Muse luncheons. You will be able to get tickets through my website once the dates are firmed up. If you interested in having one for a special group, please call me at the studio 804-725-1183 or on my cell 804-366-0990.
Enjoy!

Opposing Expectations Structure is the Pathway to the Bubble of Inspiration 6 Steps Anytime Anywhere
Many people think of artists as unstructured, no rules, free thinkers. Yet it is routine structure which provides access to inspiration in any endeavor. Contrary to what many people think, the route to inspiration is NOT a straight line! If you follow the structure, you will discover the bubble of inspiration every time.
Put your Self in the space of this garden painting and feel how it feels. The pathway line leads you in along the row of cypress trees. The wall across the back takes you at an angle perpendicular to the way you came in and leads you into the square of the third wall to the far left. The circular bed of boxwood in the center takes you into your center. Amid all of this structure ~ the garden blooms profusely, one species atop another in perfect harmony. By the time your eye gets to the center of the painting, you are also in your own center ~ in that bubble.
Whether you are creating a painting, a garden or anything else; structure is the place to start. To create using this way, follow these 6 simple geometric steps.

Assateague painting Inspires Gratitude
I wrote about my trip to Assateague last week. Though I had enjoyed the day, I was disappointed that the ponies did not oblige being painted. We saw them only as we left ~ a stunning sight in the 5:00 sun standing in the brilliant green marsh.
This image has stuck in my mind ever since. I kept seeing it in my mind's eye painted large on a four by five foot gallery wrap canvas. I debated with myself about trying to paint ponies, a subject I have never painted before, so large! Finally, I gave in and just did it.
The only thing I have left to say to the Muse about it is 'Thank You! I know I debate and argue with you about what I think I can and can't do! You are right ... each time I give up arguing, you make me look like I knew what I was doing all along! Thank you!"
When you catch yourself debating or arguing with the Muse......... give in. Just do it! Maybe you'll be saying 'Thank You!' too.

Light in the Window
The First Step in Finding The Creative in You
It's not about What You Know or If You Have Talent! It's much simpler than that...
It all begins with a single point. For example, It was a grey rainy day when I painted this garden. I had walked by it several times earlier in the week, thinking each time how much I would like to paint it. Yet the day I finally settled in to do so, it was misting rain. READ MORE>
This painting, Light in the Window, is on view at the Historic Old Library & Museum in New Castle, DE through July 5. For information or directions contact Mike Connolly, 302-322-2794, Executive Director, New Castle Historic Society.

Fertile Pasture Be a Kid Again and Follow the Muse
When the flow is going, it can take you to some amazing places ~ if you just let go! If you're not sure how to do that, here is an example which may help you discover your Fertile Pasture.
When I woke last Friday, I was relieved to have caught up with my household tasks from being away in New Castle the previous week. I had rested when I got home Sunday, but then scrambled all week to catch up on all sorts of things. You know the way things seem to change more dramatically when you are away from home...
When I woke Friday morning, mist from the heavy rain we had had Thursday was lit up by the morning sun. So I seized the opportunity, grabbed a large canvas on which I had blocked in a view of the river months ago and headed for the beach.
I like going down there at 7 in the morning. I can kick off my shoes and be by myself. Painting barefoot before breakfast, well that's my idea of perfection. The beach I had in mind is just down the lane from my house. We call it Misty Cove. The view overlooks Burton's Point at the mouth of the Piankatank River. Well, I was making my bee line for the sand when I drove past this pasture. The sheep with their lambs huddled in the mist of the effervescent green meadow took my breath away! READ MORE>

Walking in the Rain
What Does it Really Mean to Go With the Flow?
You hear people talk about going with the flow. What that really means is allowing Your True Self to Step Out. We are changing so quickly now, we hardly recognize ourselves unless we take a moment to catch our own reflection in things around us. Perhaps you will see yourself in this ...
This painting is a great example of going with the flow ~ literally! My intent was to paint gardens. However, the rain became too heavy to continue painting in the garden. Instead I looked for a sheltered spot. An arch on the main square seemed the perfect.
I was attracted to the light pole with prolific hanging baskets and brightly colored flags. So I set up me easel facing it. The store front, I thought, would make a nice backdrop for my hanging garden painting. Think again!
The Muse had different things in mind. As soon as I got my easel set up and sketchbook in hand, a car pulled up at the yellow curb and blocked my view. Thinking they wouldn't be long, I continued laying out my painting. MORE>
