Greetings!
We pray this month's newsletter finds you hopeful and trusting our faithful Father. We can trust him for ALL we need, want, or hope. Sometimes I think we take that lightly. If we believe He has His best in mind for us, why is it unimaginable that He doesn't have our best career path in mind, the best mate, the best school or direction for our family? He is necessary for everything that we can hope to achieve or overcome. Everything about Him can be depended upon.
In our Focus article this month Latisha Lee asks Are You Protected? Spiritual warfare isn't occasional, nor should it be a surprise. We should always be aware, prepared and ready.
Have you ever been so engrossed with life or a "great" plan that you fail to listen or acknowledge God's leading? DeVonne Johnson shares in our Singles section how God interrupted the seemingly great plans of her life. Lee Watts shares Blessing Your Children in the Midst of a Busy Life in Sweet Breaths. She reminds us that there are simple ways to break from our busy lives and make the most of our time with our children.
Are you making lifestyle changes? We've put together a a list of books in Exhale -Motivation to Move: 5 Books that Will Inspire You to Take Care of Your Temple. Finally, be sure to read On Assignment and Short Breaths. They will encourage you in your walk and give you useful information to pass on to others.
"Those who know your name trust in you, for you, O LORD, have never abandoned anyone who searches for you" (Psalm 9:10, NLT) .
Blessings,
Latisha J. Lee |

FOCUS
Are You Protected?
by Latisha Lee
Have you ever seen a UVA or UVB? Neither have I, but we are all aware that we should protect our skin against them to prevent melanoma or other skin damaging effects of the sun. If you're anything like me I have a large bottle of SPF 30 sunscreen, but I only use it if we're going to a pool or the beach. If I'm really diligent I may slather some on for a trip to the park. According to doctors we should use it daily; rain or shine, winter, spring, summer or fall. Uh-oh...
As the mercury continues to rise I was thinking about spiritual things that we are warned about and how passive we are with our spiritual battles. We are told that the weapons of our warfare are not carnal. We are not fighting against flesh and blood. Yes, the things that are attacking us are unseen. Yet knowing that they are unseen, we continue to expose ourselves to the damaging effects of unforgiveness, deceit, pride, discontentment and the many other traps that cause us to fall prey to sin.
What can we do to protect ourselves from the effects of sin?
Rain or Shine. Even when we are in a good season with beautiful, blue skies and the sun shining bright, know that we are susceptible to attacks. It could come in the form of a mood change or overwhelming feelings of dissatisfaction. Cover yourself with verses and praises of thanksgiving.
Index, Index, Index. You know those little note cards? Yes. Know the areas where you're most vulnerable and guard them! The enemy is good at reminding us of our downfalls, insecurities and past sins. We have to remember (index) that we've been redeemed. Condemnation and shame are longer hanging over us. We are a new creation - take note of it, remember it, walk in it!
Son Protection Factor (SPF) Don't forget to recognize and acknowledge the most significant and necessary protection we have - our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! He is the One that is interceding on our behalf, He is the One who rose with victory, He is the One that strengthens us through trials, encourages us when we're weak, He's the comfort we need when we're burned out. When we cry out to Him in our times of trouble He is faithful to deliver.
Sunscreen protection or not? SPF 15 or 50? Broad-spectrum or water-proof? How you will protect your skin against the rays of the sun is your choice. We don't have a choice when it comes to spiritual warfare. If we want live an effective or abundant life in Christ we must take the proper measures to protect ourselves from the darts and arrows that come at us daily. Sin comes easy when we don't guard ourselves from those unseen threats. Guard yourself daily, liberally and often. Begin with thanksgiving, remember who you are in Christ and know where your protection comes from. Call out to HIM. |

Save the Promise
My Planning, My God's Promises
by DeVonne Johnson
Save the date announcements have become a very popular trend for special events. I had been engaged recently and I was reading up on wedding planning, dresses, venue's etc. trying to make sure my day was a perfect celebration with all of my family and friends. We had a wedding date and I was starting to draft my "Save the Date" announcements.
Out on a date with my fiancé I quickly became un-engaged. Just like that, all of my planning had been in vain. My fiancé broke his promise. I did not understand how God could set me up for such a let down. I had been praying for a husband and I thought God had answered my prayers.
I heard God's voice softly saying "I know the things I have promised concerning your life but, do not get your plans confused with my purpose and promises."
After a lot of crying and pondering in my first class pity party, I had to go back to my Bible and read the promises of God, pray and reconnect with Him. I felt betrayed. How dare God leave, sending me through this confusion? I cried out to Him and He spoke. It wasn't long before His word, His promises, and His voice began to comfort me.
God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill? (Numbers 23:19, NV)
My planning could have cost me God's promise, which supersedes anything I could have wanted for myself.
"As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. (Isaiah 55:9, NIV)
In my searching out this situation I was wrong, God had never left my side nor did he betray me.
God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." (Hebrews 13:5b, NIV)
My mind was so consumed with my plans for my life, that I had detoured from the purpose and promises God had ordained for me. I neglected to seek the Kingdom because I was so focused and involved in planning my wedding. Looking back, I don't even recall asking God was this Him, His work or His will! Although, I couldn't see it at the time, GOD FAVORED ME! People make promises and change their minds. I am reminded and we can be confident that the promises of God are going to go forth because of the covenant we have with Him. There is HOPE! There is no Greater Love than that of God.
I am still standing and saving the promise, but my save the date plan has changed. He knows the plans He has for me, declares the LORD, plans to prosper me and not to harm me, plans to give me hope and a future. [paraphrase of Jeremiah 29:11]
The plans that fill my calendar now are His plans. That's something I can celebrate everyday. |

SWEET BREATHS
Blessing Your Children in the Midst of a Busy Life
by Levitica Watts
Life can get really busy and crazy. As we rush to complete our lists and keep all the balls in the air, we often forget to be proactive in blessing and ministering to our children. There are creative and fun ways we can still get the "to-do" list done and take time to bless these beautiful gifts from God. Below are a few ways we can bless our children:
Sing songs. Music is a powerful and beautiful gift from God. It can change moods, invoke memories and create loads of fun. Both of my children, particularly my youngest, love music. He finds pure joy in just singing and listening to his favorite songs. I decided to make a CD of their favorite songs so I can easily pop it in when its time to sing at the top of our lungs or dance around the kitchen or just drive around with the windows down. Find out your childrens favorite tunes and just dance!!! It is an easy way to remind them of God's love and get a few smiles and giggles.
Listen. Often we spend so much time talking TO our children, we forget to simply listen and let them talk about whatever they need to talk about. Be patient and see where the conversation leads. It is a good way to learn more about our children and the way God is forming their hearts and personalities. It is also a great way to get children to develop their own opinions, or gives us hints on how to pray for our children.
Work out your own issues. One of the best things we can do - is give our children our best selves! Take time to work on your own issues or weaknesses so we can better listen, understand and minister to our children. Often our own issues become our children's issues. Let's be prepared to give them solutions if those issues creep into their lives.
Teach independence. Its so easy to fall into the trap of doing everything for our kids. I know...I often have to fight to not "just do it" when I see them taking longer to do a task. However sitting back and encouraging them to learn independence will pay off in the future.
Demonstrate stewardship. Showing our children how to take care of the many gifts in their lives, from money to their buckets and closets of toys and clothes will pay off in the end. Set expectations and give allowances. Teach them to clean their rooms and pick up toys. This will prepare them to appreciate and take care of things as an adult and steer them away for selfishness and self-entitlement. Remind them that everything is a gift from God and needs to be taken care of.
There are so many fun ways to bless our children. I'm sure you have a few interesting ideas of your own. If you have a few to contribute, please post them on our facebook wall. |

BETWEEN BREATHS
More To the Story...
by Levitica Watts

Headlines. Lately, I've been consumed with them. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Andrew Weiner. Bishop Eddie Long, Casey Anthony trial. When I don't have time to read the news, I quickly catch up by listening to CNN, HLN or one of the morning magazine shows. I will get a 2 minute story and run off to my day, thinking I've really gotten the "story." I continue on with my day repeating the story of others as I get coffee or make copies....as if I KNOW.

ON ASSIGNMENT
What Is Your Brand?
by Levitica Watts
When we think of "branding" - we often think of product marketing, companies or even celebrities. However, branding reaches far beyond the boardroom or Hollywood. It effects each of us regardless of our sphere of influence. Just as a bottle of Coke or Gatorade or the name Nike or Porsche - our vessel, work product or image communicates something every day. Whether we are launching a business, looking for our next career or job, or simply ministering to our Sunday school group or the even the world - we should be aware of our brand and if it is time to sharpen or improve that personal brand.
As women of God, we've been given tremendous influence. We can simply start by reading in Genesis to see the beginning of our powerful influence. Satan knew who to whisper to and how to attack mankind.
One of the things I love about the Gospels, is that Jesus was so clear about His influence and "personal brand." He knew what His purpose was and how He was to achieve it. He was a man on a mission and didn't get bogged down by the personal opinions of others.
I'm always amazed when I attend funerals and listen to what others say about the person. I particularly love when you see a theme developing in the comments. When everyone continually says the same things about a person. What do we see? Voila...a personal brand. The person's life was consistent and clear and lined up with what s/he put out to the world. Their lives spoke. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we all had such clarity in our lives? If we knew our influence, our purpose? If we were consistent in our actions and beliefs and projected such to the world.
Below are ways that we can brand ourselves more effectively and become more effective in the workplace, community and ministry.
Write a Mission Statement and Set Goals
Who do you want to be? Where do you want to go? I often ask people: "What do you want to be famous for?" Although most of us will never be an Oprah or Jay-Z, and for some of us, that is not our desire. However, we can and will be known for something in our own corner of the world. What do you want to accomplish and be known for in your world? Teaching? Speaking? Writing? Encouraging Women? A guru on Christian marriages? Or Entrepreneurship? A good way to influence is to write it down and gather a clear understanding of who you want to be and where you want to go.
Take Inventory
I once read that a good indicator of your future is to look at what you are reading, watching or buying right now. Look at your wardrobe and how you present yourself. Ask your closest friend and family what you are "saying" to the world. I once taught a class to women entitled "What is Your Fragrance?" and encouraged women to think about the fragrance they give out to the world, while encouraging them to become a sweet fragrance unto God and others.
Realize Your Influence and Build Upon It
Who are you influencing and how? One of the keys to great branding is knowing your "audience" inside and out. If women is your audience and who God has called you to minister to, know them. The same for marriages, entrepreneurs, teens, or whomever it is that God has called you to influence. Study them. Go where they are. Seek them and immerse yourself in their world.
There are are myriad of other ways to influence others and build your personal brand. Whether you are going back in the workforce or expanding your ministry - we can start with the tips mentioned above. However, more than anything - it must start with prayer and a foundation in the Word of God. We cannot begin to know ourselves without knowing our Creator. Find out who He created you to be and move forward with living that best self out for the world before you.
