Dear Newsletter Reader,
With the start of the new year, some uncertainty still persists in the steel market. World economic output is projected to rise in both advanced and emerging economies; however, the pace of economic recovery continues to vary. Experts on world economy predict that the recovery in North America is on track, that Europe will be divided in two separate financial leagues and that we will see tendencies of over-heating in some developing countries. We can conclude that many capex projects around the world that were put on hold during the financial crisis are now restarting and we are adapting our organization to the increasing product demand.
In this, the first newsletter of this promising year, you will read about a refractory conference in Jamshedpur, GrafTech's recent growth acquisitions and the upcoming 6th European Coke and Ironmaking Conference.
Hope you enjoy reading it. As always, we value your feedback and any suggestions you may have for material you would like to see covered in future issues. |
ICRJ Refractory Conference in Jamshedpur, India
On November 23-24, 2010, TATA Steel and the Indian Ceramic Society hosted the International Conference on Refractories. Held in Bistupur, Jamshedpur, India, the conference included more than 250 participants. Jamshedpur is the site of the first integrated iron and steelmaking plant in India, built by TATA Steel more than 100 years ago. A total of 40 papers were presented over the two days, of which four addressed different aspects of blast furnace hearth refractories. One paper reported on several recent records achieved in campaign length/productivity from blast furnaces from around the world. |

Peter Sylvén, Marketing Director, presented his paper, Record Breaking Blast Furnace Hearth Campaigns - an update 2010. T he paper presented by Mr. Sylven stirred a lively discussion around the Indian dinner buffet, as several supporters of large carbon block linings were amazed by the results he presented. Arguments included, "but it can't work with that many joints and the porosity measured for the UCAR® Refractory materials in laboratories is higher than in super micropore blocks." The paper not only reported and documented the superior performance; it also explained the technical reasons in detail. Please contact us for a copy of the paper to read for yourself. |
GrafTech Propelling Growth Through Recent Acquisitions
At the end of last year, GrafTech announced that it had completed the acquisitions of Seadrift Coke L.P., the world's second largest producer of petroleum-based needle coke based in Port Lavaca, Texas, USA and C/G Electrodes LLC, a graphite electrode producer headquartered in St. Marys, Pennsylvania, USA.
Craig Shular, Chairman and CEO of GrafTech commented:
"We are delighted to announce the successful completion of these acquisitions. We look forward to partnering with the excellent teams at Seadrift and C/G to grow our Company, best serve our customers and generate sustainable long-term value for our shareholders."
"GrafTech's Refractory Systems team is excited about the addition of the St. Marys facility to the GrafTech family. St. Marys has a long history of manufacturing high-quality graphite products, and this addition will increase our supply flexibility and ultimately enable us to serve our Refractory customers better," added Peter Duncanson, GrafTech Refractory Systems Sales Director.

METEC #8 and ECIC #6 in 2011-We Will See You There!
The last European Coke and Ironmaking Congress (ECIC #5) was held in Stockholm in June 2005. Many of us still remember the scenic boat trip and excellent dinner arranged by GrafTech at the sunny island of Fjäderholmarna in the archipelago of the Swedish capital. Some of us also remember the quality of the papers presented. Here is an opportunity to re-read one of our favorites: "New Hearth Lining Direction at Salzgitter Flachstahl Blast Furnace B." Access the paper here on our website.
This summer, the conference will be held in Düsseldorf, Germany, and it will be combined with the METEC InSteelCon 2011 event. In addition, the following international conferences will be conducted at the same time: the 7th European Continuous Casting Conference (ECCC), the 4th International Conference on Modeling and Simulation of Metallurgical Processes in Steelmaking (STEELSIM), and the 1st International Conference on Energy Efficiency and CO2 Reduction in the Steel Industry (EECRsteel).
These events all take place as accompanying congresses and conferences to the leading metallurgical trade fair, METEC, and the trade fairs GIFA, THERMPROCESS and NEWCAST. More than 70,000 visitors are expected. All ECIC participants have free entrance to all four leading trade fairs, which is why we hope to see many of you at our stand in Hall 4. Because, in addition to attending the ECIC, GrafTech will exhibit at the METEC conference again this year. The results from exhibiting in 2007 were very positive and we are now working hard to make this summer's event even better than the last!

Mr. Manoj Grover of Norinco, representative for GrafTech in India, on site in Odisha. |
This order was for the supply of UCAR® HotPressed™ brick linings to JSL's two FeCr furnaces in Kalinganagar, Odisha, (formerly Orissa), India. The linings have since been installed and are performing very well. These UCAR linings replaced two prematurely failed (< 2 years!) conventional micropore large carbon block linings. Prior to this decision, Jindal visited South Africa to discuss the UCAR Refractory Systems' concept with other operators. More than 70% of all FeCr furnaces and 93% of FeMn furnaces in RSA are using the UCAR® materials, which has allowed these producers to increase their campaign lives and productivity considerably compared to those using conventional refractory technology. |
