Upcoming Events How Did This Happen? An Artist's Journey from Math to Sculpture Wednesday, May 9, 2012, @ 7 p.m.
How does a mathematician in a suit one day find himself a full time sculptor covered in sawdust the next? Artist John Magnan, whose creations are included in the new exhibition In The Grain at the Mill Brook Gallery and Sculpture Garden, will explain how this happened to him at his artist talk at the gallery. John will trace his artistic journey from the secluded world of electronic intelligence to the highly visible world of open studios and public art. Along the way, the artist will explain the origins of his unique "growth ring carving" technique, and share his thoughts on where ideas come from in the first place.

Sculptors Donna Dodson & Andy Moerlein
presenting a fascinating artist's talk Donna Dodson has been carving images out of wood since 1996. Her sculptures explore feminine beauty and evoke humor and playfulness but also grace, power and emotional strength. Her unique vision responds to the relation of animals to the human spirit that have existed since ancient times.
My work today seeks out eccentric branches, expressive trees, vivid grain, and uses the woven flow of growth and experience to trace my personal story. My work has many aspects - but wood, trees and the patterns they mark upon the landscape is a foundation of structure I depend on.
