From the Captain

Golf Committee Elections
Golf shareholders should take note that the notice for this year's golf committee elections (in December) will be issued shortly.

Eligible members with enthusiasm and the drive to make a difference are encouraged to nominate and stand for election. Don't leave it to someone else.

Course Review
We, your golf committee, have still not received the details of the independent course review that was undertaken and are very interested to hear the Board's plan for the next year.

PW Thomson Trophy and Shareholders Cup
Following the inability to complete this event due to poor weather last Saturday this event will be rescheduled to Saturday 22nd January

Players can register on the MiClub website from Monday 13th December until Monday 10th January.
All other conditions remain the same.

Unfortunately very little golf was played on the day, however the Winner of the Shareholders PGA prize to Coolum was done by names out of the hat - Congratulations to Robert Copeland whose name was drawn first.

Mixed Foursomes Championship
Following the postponement of this event last Sunday it will be rescheduled to a date in early 2011 - this date will be announced in the next 3 weeks.

Ladies Section
Ladies Holden Scramble 2010 Team

Holden Scramble Regional Final.
We would like to congratulate our team of ladies who qualified for the Holden Scramble Regional Final which was played at Yering Meadows. They did extremely well to make the final and enjoyed the experience of the day. The day was won by a team from Box Hill who will now travel to QLD for the finals.

The team from left to right. Meg Maher, Pam Walker, Marilyn Bryant, Sharlene Bennetts and Christian Hamilton

Ladies Golf Christmas Breakup
Will be on Tuesday 7th Dec. This will consist of a fun game of golf -followed by lunch in the wintergarden . We encourage all the lady golfers to join us on this day as the golf will not be a serious affair. Could you also please bring a gift for a teenager as we will once again be donating gifts to the Salvation Army for their program with youth in the area. These young people often get forgotten when we are thinking of donating toys at Christmas. More details of the day will be put up in the golf lobby.

Sunday 5's.
Several Ladies are playing against other clubs in handicap matchplay on Sundays, this is a great opportunity to play at other courses and to meet lady members from other clubs. I would like to thank Phillipa Freund who has organized the teams this year. We have won some and lost some matches. This Sunday the team will play at Medway and we wish them good golfing. We will then host the final round at Sandhurst on 14th Nov.

WGV Metropolitan Matchplay and WGV Pennant will be rushing towards us once Christmas is over. Both teams are in Section 4 next year after winning their sections this year. The season starts from March 6th and practices will commence after Christmas for the players. Notices will be put up in the Golf Lobby so please if you are interested in being considered to play in either team please watch for the relevant information.

Amalgamation of WGV with VGA
There is to be a special general meeting of Women's Golf Victoria at Southern Golf Club on Tues 16th Nov at 6.00pm to vote for amalgamation of the VGA and WGV.
Also for the VGA to change its name to Golf Victoria and adopt the Golf Victoria Constitution. If passed WGV will transfer all assets and liabilities to Golf Victoria.

We as a club with Lady Members have one vote at this meeting. The 2 associations have been working towards this amalgamation for many years and now need a majority of 75% for this resolution to take place. If any Lady members are against this resolution could you please contact me via [email protected]. Unless any objections received, Sandhurst as a club will be voting for the amalgamation on Tues 16th.

If you require more details on this matter please look at the notice board in the golf lobby or on the relevant websites. www.golfvic.org.au or www.womensgolf.org.au

Greens Sub-Committee

Just some of the activities that will receive focus in the coming month. You can view the more detailed programs and activities in the Oct'2010 Course Report link below:

  • Bunker re-shaping continues on both courses to improve aesthetics (definition of lip and depth of perception), ease and reduction of maintenance and playability
  • On both courses spring renovation on greens has been completed. This involves coring, core removal, grooming, the addition of amendments as per soil tests taken in advance, sanding to fill core holes and the addition of a fertiliser on completion. After this process it takes approximately one month to firm and speed the greens up, back to normal levels. The benefits of this bi-annual event are many and varied but include aeration, improvement of drainage, manage thatch and to increase root growth.
  • Spring is always a busy time for cutting rough and weed control in the roughs. We are also touching up areas on fairways for the removal of cool season grasses to ensure a clean surface coming into summer. Following this touch up work, pre-emergent's are used to negate emerging weed and grass species in all couch surfaces.
  • Spring also sees the burgeoning of a number of pests such as Argentine Stem Weevil and Black Beetle. These pests can have a dramatic, deleterious effect on turf hence a preventative application is applied early spring. This has an added benefit in that it limits the food source for birds which can cause significant damage as seen in the past.

Also please not the following activities and changes that are happening:

  • The OOB markers on holes 3 & 4 on the champions course have moved to the golf course side of the dry (wet) creek bed. This means a ball hit into the dry creek bed will be OOB as this is not a water hazard anymore.
  • We have started refurbishing the permanent plates on the north course.
  • At the end of this month the 2 courses will move a step ahead in the new handicapping system, by being re-rated using by the new USGA method of rating. As of this date we will have a new ratings for the black, blue ,white , red and cyclical courses. Cyclical being the course the men play most of the time that has never had a rating.
  • A new grass path has been mowed for the ladies between the 6th green and the 7th tee on the north course.

Competition & Match

Rules - Did You Know?
Etiquette - Golf is played, for the most part, without the supervision of a referee or umpire.
The game relies on the integrity of the individual to show consideration for other players, care for the course and to abide by the Rules.

All players should conduct themselves in a disciplined manner, demonstrating courtesy and sportsmanship at all times, irrespective of how competitive they may be. Etiquette is an integral and inextricable part of the game, which has come to define golf's values worldwide.

Put simply, it is a series of guidelines that exist to show other players, whether through divot repair or awareness of your shadow, a degree of fairness which you would expect to receive in return.

Lets explore three areas of etiquette with two-time Open Champion Padraig Harrington:

Spring has arrived and that means longer and brighter days for us to get back in shape. We can already see lots of Resident and Golf Members walking and jogging around, as well as some of them coming into the Health Club and using the facilities. That is great to see and we are looking forward to helping you get fit and healthy.

Daylight Savings begins on Sunday and we would like to remind everyone that the Health Club's hours of operations will be returning to 9:00am til 6:00pm Saturdays and Sundays.
