UPDATES: Skate Missionary David Reasbeck
One of my favorite email newsletters to read is David Reasbeck. David is a skate missionary extroidinare who has travel to more countries in the last year alone than I have in my entire life. He is passionate about his faith and mission and travels encouraging those reaching skaters and helping to plant skate churches. Where is he heading next? "I'm headed back to Germany in Feb. for a few months to visit and hang with the guys at Living Room Skate Church! I really feel pressed with the desire to just spend some real one on one time with a lot of these guys. I want to see them become even more grounded in their faith, and see more come to decisions for Christ! I am hoping to take a group of them on a skate church plant mission trip to Portugal for Easter Sunday this year! So, please pray about this for us!"
Other Tenative Dates: Feb. 16 - Apr. 22--Germany- The Living Room Skate Church Apr. 25 - July 25--Australia- Beachside Skate Comp. Aug. 4 - Nov. 4--Scotland- Skate Church Plant in Dundee Mid Nov.- End Nov.- Canada intern training and equipping
How can we pray for you? "There are so many doors of opportunity that are opening up before me, and I really need your help in prayer for me to have clarity in the direction that The Lord is leading me in. I know that 'good' is the biggest enemy to 'the best'! And I want nothing to do with the things that are just 'good'. My desire is to be a part of what God's intentions are for my life, THE BEST!I know we are in some pretty tough times at the moment, but this just means that WE need to get the Gospel out with much more urgency! I pray that you will continue to partner with me in any way possible! If you would like to help support any of these trips financially; just click on: Globe International and give online."

Quote:
"Asking the Lord into
my life has helped me realize how blessed I am, and how thankful I
should be. Everything in this world is temporary, and the only way to
be grounded is to know how fragile you are, and to acknowledge what
life is really about. That perspective is priceless." -Jamie Thomas

HELP US MAKE AN IMPACT: Join the cause
 Christian Skaters
is on a mission to change the world. How? Well, we have a vision of a
skate ministry within skating distance of every skater around the
world. This is a tall order, but we know that the God we are called to
serve can do anything. Did you know? Childhood
obesity rates have risen dramatically over the past 30 years. According
to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 19 percent of
young people aged 6-11 years are obese, while more than 17 percent of
12 to 19 year olds are.The CDC estimates that the total cost of obesity in the United States
in the year 2000 was $117 billion. While some cases of obesity may be
caused by genetics or other factors, most are the result of modifiable
behaviors such as overeating, a sedentary lifestyle and lack of
exercise. Read more...

DO SOMETHING: We Need A Skatepark!
|
Whether you're a church, parent, skater, community activist or facing a passionate group of
constituents, you recognize that skateboarders in your area need safe
places to recreate. What you do with that knowledge could mean the
difference between a incredible new facility that the community is
proud of or something that falls far short of that.
Going into
the skatepark development process with a good grasp of the kinds of
decisions you will be making is the most important-and for many the
most elusive-part of planning for success. As a community leader or
project manager, your role is particularly vital and you will be tasked
with educating those around you on the merits of those key decisions.
1. Pick up the Public Skatepark Development Guide
The good news is that there is a field guide to this process, the Public Skatepark Development Guide. Now in its second edition, the Guide
will prepare you for all of the stages in skatepark planning and
development. Written by experienced community activists from all over
the nation, the Guide is your best source for skatepark development available anywhere. Furthermore, it's free. All services and production costs have been donated. You pay only shipping.

2. Understand Your Need Like any other facility, one cannot plan a skatepark without having some idea of the scale of need it's meant to fill. Use Skaters for Public Skateparks' Skatepark Adoption Model to measure your area's skatepark need.
3. Know Your Materials There
are two popular types of skatepark material approaches available:
Concrete and prefabricated. Prefabricated skatepark materials include
steel and wood-polymer ramps. Most skatepark obstacles can be built
using either material. Concrete will provide more design flexibility as
the structures are built on-site to the design specification, (rather
than the design specification meeting the prefabricated structures
available). Prefab, (steel and wood-polymer ramps), has the advantage
of a reduced design cost and schedule as the park is designed using a
list of pre-designed elements. There are many pros and cons to these materials. Do your research before you build. 4. Consult an Expert NO SKATEPARK IS BETTER THAN A BAD SKATEPARK! Consult an unbiased expert. While you may be
getting great information from a sales representative, they're in the
business of selling something. Instead, look at your local skaters and other communities like yours who are enjoying
success with their parks. Many playground companies have jumped on the bandwagon providing ramps that are not made for skaters but instead for profits. Look for a solid company with ramps designed and built by skaters. Check references and remember that lower cost many times means lowers quality. Finding quality skate built ramps will cost lest in the long run and keep skaters coming.

NEWS: Architects Inspired by Skate, Develop Stealth Skateparks in Norway, Spain & Germany
Skaters have always seen more than the average person when looking at architectural form. Skaters look at things differently. To many, a picnic bench is just a place to eat your lunch, but to skaters it can take on a whole new meaning. "For years, architects have gone to great lengths to protect their
buildings from marauding skaters. But as aesthetic trends move toward
folded planes that transition seamlessly from wall to ceiling and back
to wall, designers have been looking to their former adversaries for a
lesson in flow.", says Wired. Skateparks.org reported that, "Finally it appears that architects are picking up
on skaters' desires and creating forms that are intentionally
interactive. It has been no secret to urban planners that successful
public spaces require public participation, and few groups are more
participatory than skateboarders. Architects are learning that by
creating forms that attract skaters they can immediately activate a
space like never before." For the Wired Magazine article that recently covered this change of
thinking click here. |

SKATE AROUND THE GLOBE: Skateboarding in Afghanistan
Local youth and international NGO workers in Kabul, Afghanistan have
started the country's first skateboarding school, Skateistan. By
introducing the positive and cross-cultural aspects of skateboarding,
Skateistan hopes to provide new opportunities to the local youth.
Skateboarding students are admitted based on a number of economic and
cultural factors. Skateistan's curriculum obviously includes
skateboarding instruction but also has qualities of project management,
life skills, and English. Ultimately the group's mission is to empower
the students to take leadership positions on issues important to them
and build social networks that cross ethic barriers. One of the
clearest reflections of that mission is that Skateistan teaches both
boys and girls.
The group is currently securing a permanent location for their school
and recruiting additional staff. While Skateistan is still in its early
development, it still qualifies for one of the world's boldest and most
visionary skateboarding missions ever. Just imagine the potential...For more information about this skate school click here. |

WATCH: Nike SB Welcomes Matt Beach to the Team
Matt Beach describes his skills like this: 'It trips me out that this is what I do for a living. Sometimes I
think, "Wow, it's crazy that this has happened." The only thing I ever
wanted to do was skateboard, and I feel like it's god-given gift. I
mean, I know that's a weird gift-I don't know. I just skate (laughs). I
guess I don't think about it too much. I was given parents who allowed
me to do it. That's a gift right there. And I was given friends who
were into it as much as I was. People who support me and sponsor me-I
mean, that's amazing. I've been blessed.' So, we are proud to announce that Nike SB Welcomes Matt Beach to the team. Matt Beach is a fellow Christian and quoted to be "one of the most under rated skaters of all time" by legend Lance Mountain. Check out the welcome video over at the Nike SB website.
