Serve & Send - Splinter Skatepark Jamaica
|
If you've been reading our ENews, you have seen that we have a heart to help start a skatepark in Jamaica. Boston Bay is one of the rural areas of Jamaica and known for it's amazing beaches, surf & the origin of jerk chicken.
45% of the population of the island of Jamaica is under the age of 19. The average age of a mother giving birth to her first child is only 15. The absence of father figures plagues the nation with the West Indies being second only to Africa in the rise of aids. A youth program will provide unimaginable opportunites to educate the youth, create a sense of family, provide safety, increase confidence, build healthy lifestyles and be a daily opportunity to teach the youth of the love of their true father in heaven.
If you've watched the videos, you can see that they don't even have concrete that's skateable. So, the first step will be constructing a concrete slab. The cost of materials for this project alone are over $30,000. We hope to bring a team in late April, yet must have the supplies to make this happen. Through Splinter Skateparks & Upliftment Jamaica, Stephen hopes to find donations to cover this first step. If you have a heart to help him on this mission and can contribute, please contact Stephen@splinterskatepark.com or donate here through Paypal

Pray For Skate Missionary Stephen A. King
|
Youth
worker and program instructor Stephen A. King (on right with Uli from Christian Skaters) has passionately mentored Boston Bay's
local youth for a year in an effort to investigate the willingness and interest
of the youth. Stephen spent that same
year encouraging structured recreation with these youth and building small
skateboard ramps to share in the enthusiasm and progression of the youth's main
interest. With a heart for the youth of Boston Bay, Stephen began investigating the support and involvement of the local elder community, young adults,
government and Rotarian members in Jamaica. The donation of land and the utilization of
an inactive community center were pursued.
The local board of directors willingly donated the land and
building.
After this initial year
exceeded expectations, Splinter Youth Inc. sought to adopt the furthering of
this idea and a promotional DVD was produced in order to
raise awareness, funding and equipment donation state-side. Stephen traveled with Splinter across the US and
abroad to raise awareness, funding and petition for equipment donations. Splinter Youth Inc. has teamed-up with LPA to
organize and conduct three events in Jamaica's three major cities in
April and May. These events will promote
The Jamaican Skatepark Fund, provide skateboarding demonstrations and encourage
communities to be a part of the movement to encourage and build-up the youth
within the formation of programs like the one being established in Boston Bay.
Stephen's heart is create a Christ like atmosphere and leadership for this youth center which will make long-term investments into the future of the youth of Boston Bay and Jamaica. Watch this new video about the ministry in Boston Bay.
Please pray for:
- Raising of funding to build and operate this program
- $30k for concrete slab
- $150k for importing skatepark & materials
- Additional funding to complete other areas of the youth center
- Youth program educational & operational materials
- Skateboarding Safety Equipment (Helmets & pads)
Praise God for:
- Donated land & building to run the program
- Constructed basketball & netball courts
- Skateboarding equipment donations
- Awareness & support of the local givernment
- Willingness of the youth to be involved

Get Involved - Jamaica Skate Mission
|
Our hope is to bring willing workers to work alongside the community
and be bright lights as we construct this concrete slab for future
ramps. We hope to spend 7 days to coinside with the Palau festival
in Jamaica. We estimate the cost for this skate mission will be roughly
$1200 per person from Fort Lauderdale. The cost will include flight (from Fort Lauderdale),
food, hotel, insurance & transfers. If you feel called to be a part
of this team, you may contact tonif@christianskaters.com for an application and more information. We hope to bring a team of 20 to skate, serve, fellowship and pray for this community. Youth groups & skate ministries welcome.

Support - Help build the Jamaica Park
|
Like most, I hate asking for money....but to build parks it costs money. Combine that with the costs fo import and Stephen has a large feat on his hands. Still, we all know that God is bigger, right? So, here is the run down...
- $30k - $50k for concrete pad
- $150k for the ramps
- Labor - donated
- Land & Youth Building- donated
So, if you can spare $200,000 we'd love for you to write a check. However, if you are like me, you may not have $200,000 just lying around. So, here are some ways you can help:
- Consider approaching your local skateshop and asking to place some info and a change jar to support the Jamaican Skatepark Fund.
- Ask a local buisness or your church to consider sponsoring a ramp or making a small contribution.
- Host a skate contest at your local park with entry fees to go towards Splinter Jamaica.
- Contact Stephen and encourage him in this call.
- Pray for this vision.
