Eye of the Red Tsar
Eye of the Red Tsar
Shortly after midnight on July 17, 1918, the imprisoned family of Tsar Nicholas Romanov was awakened and led down to the basement of the Ipatiev house. There they were summarily executed. Their bodies were hidden away, the location a secret of the Soviet state. A decade later, Pekkala, once the most trusted secret agent of the Romanovs, is now Prisoner 4745-P, banished to a forest on the outskirts of humanity. But the state needs Pekkala one last time. His mission: catch the assassins who slaughtered the Romanovs, locate the royal child rumored to be alive, and give Stalin the international coup he craves. Find the bodies, Pekkala is told, and you will find your freedom.

In a land of uneasy alliances and lethal treachery, pursuing clues that have eluded everyone, Pekkala is thrust into the past where he once reigned. There he will meet the man who betrayed him and the woman he loved and lost in the fires of rebellion-and uncover a secret so shocking that it will shake to its core the land he loves.

Heresy
Heresy

When fugitive Italian monk Giordano Bruno-philosopher, magician, and heretical scientist-arrives in London, he's only one step ahead of the Inquisition. An undercover mission for Queen Elizabeth I and her spymaster provides added protection. Officially, Bruno is to take part in a debate on the Copernican theory of the universe at Oxford University; unofficially, he is to find out whatever he can about a Catholic plot to overthrow the queen. But when his mission is dramatically thrown off course by a series of grisly deaths and the charms of a mysterious but beautiful young woman, he realizes that somewhere within Oxford's private chambers lurks a brutal killer.

You Are Not A Gadget
You Are Not A Gadget

A programmer, musician, and father of virtual reality technology, Jaron Lanier was a pioneer in digital media, and among the first to predict the revolutionary changes it would bring to our commerce and culture. Now, with the Web influencing virtually every aspect of our lives, he offers this provocative critique of how digital design is shaping society, for better and for worse.

Informed by Lanier's experience and expertise as a computer scientist, You Are Not a Gadget discusses the technical and cultural problems that have unwittingly risen from programming choices-such as the nature of user identity-that were "locked-in" at the birth of digital media and considers what a future based on current design philosophies will bring. With the proliferation of social networks, cloud-based data storage systems, and Web 2.0 designs that elevate the "wisdom" of mobs and computer algorithms over the intelligence and wisdom of individuals, his message has never been more urgent.

Greetings!

March is roaring in like a lion! We start with Pitchapalooza tonight, and then our spring series of Author Events really starts to take off. If you like books, please help us spread the word about these opportunities. It's always sad when someone finds out we hosted a favorite author after our event. You can make the difference, use the Twitter and Facebook links on this newsletter and on the event pages on our web site to help us get the word out!

We're finalizing details for three very special dinner events, featuring Frances Mayes, Jamie and Bobby Deen, and Judith Fertig. Details are coming very soon.

Watch our Weekly E-Newsletters and our Website for the latest updates.

Monday night, it's PITCHAPALOOZA!
BookDoctors

The Book Doctors, aka, Arielle Eckstut and David Henry Sterry, authors of The Essential Guide to Getting Your Book Published, will be making a house call in Kansas City, at the Kansas City Public Library, with Rainy Day Books.  They want YOU to pitch your book at their acclaimed event, Pitchapalooza, which was recently featured in The New York Times, and in a mini-documentary for Newsday. Pitchapalooza is like American Idol for books--only without the Simon. Writers get one minute to pitch their book ideas to an all-star panel of publishing experts. The winner receives an introduction to an appropriate agent or publisher for his/her book. Plus, anyone who buys a copy of The Essential Guide to Getting Your Book Published from Rainy Day Books gets a free consultation worth $100.

Arielle Eckstut has been a literary agent for 18 years. She is also the author of seven books and the co-founder of the iconic brand, LittleMissMatched. David Henry Sterry is the best-selling author of 12 books, on a wide variety of subjects including memoir, sports, YA fiction and reference. His last book appeared on the cover of the Sunday New York Times Book Review.  Together, they've helped dozens and dozens of talented amateur writers become published authors.  They've appeared everywhere from NPR's Morning Edition to USA Today, and have taught publishing workshops everywhere from the Miami Book Fair to Stanford University.
