Tough Without A Gun
Humphrey Bogart: it's hard to think of anyone who's had the same lasting impact on the culture of movies. Though he died at the young age of fifty-seven more than half a century ago, his influence among actors and filmmakers, and his enduring appeal for film lovers around the world, remains as strong as ever. What is it about Bogart, with his unconventional looks and noticeable speech impediment, that has captured our collective imagination for so long? In this definitive biography, Stefan Kanfer answers that question, along the way illuminating the private man Bogart was and shining the spotlight on some of the greatest performances ever captured on celluloid.

TheSecretSoldier
The Secret Soldier

John Wells may have left the CIA, but it hasn't left him. A mysterious call brings a surprise meeting with the aged monarch of Saudi Arabia, King Abdullah. "My kingdom is on a precipice," he tells Wells. "Powerful factions are plotting against me, and my own family is in danger. I don't know who I can trust, but I'm told I can trust you."

Reluctantly, and with the secret blessing of the CIA, Wells goes undercover; but the more he learns, the more complicated things become, and soon he, too, is unsure whom to trust, in Saudi Arabia or Washington. One thing, however, is clear: If the conspirators prevail, it will mean more than the fall of a monarch-it may be the beginning of the final conflagration between America and Islam.

Newsletter Volume 518February 7, 2011
Greetings!

Last week was pretty challenging, we hope you weathered the storm.  While the cold and snow certainly made things difficult, we hope you took advantage of the disruption and found some time to curl up with a good book.  Our staff certainly did!

We'd like to give a special thanks to the Doctors and Nurses at KU Medical Center Emergency Room.  Vivien fell on the ice last Monday, and received great care & stitchery from Nurse Practitioner Kim and the staff.  Vivien is feeling much better now and her stitches come out this week.

A little snow and ice can't stop the flow of great books!

Watch our Weekly E-Newsletters and our Website for the latest updates.

Please note that we have secured a new date for Pitchapalooza. The event will be held Monday, February 28, 2011 at 6:30 PM at Kansas City Public Library, Plaza Branch.
