Top recommendations from our knowledgeable staff |
 | Wingshooters |
Recommended by Elizabeth, Mary, and Geoffrey. School-age Michelle calls an early 1970's small town in Wisconsin her home. Her life, however, is scattered across a conflicted landscape. Born to an American father and a Japanese mother, both have abandoned Michelle to the care of her paternal grandparents. Her small town life is far from simple, as the tensions between her own heritage and the growing integration of public institutions slowly burn under the cold face of rural America. Wingshooters features a remarkably strong narrative voice: clear, innocent, and unflinching. It is a story of family conflict, race relations, ignorance in the face of inevitable change, and fracture lines that ultimately break apart. Though a work of fiction, Wingshooters explores universal truths in way that should resonate well with book clubs.
 | West of Here |
Recommended by Geoffrey, an epic novel straddling past and present in Washington State. Far up in a corner of this great country, Jonathan Evison's West of Here is calling. Travel a long and majestic river through a forest of explorers past and present. HERE is the intrepid work of a determined craftsman: carving a life for his characters out of the trees and onto the page. Go WEST, reader, and find yourself looking at the grandeur of life from the top of the mountain.
 | The Fates Will Find Their Way |
Recommended by Vivien and Geoffrey. One simply cannot stop reading Hannah Pittard's debut novel. The boys choir of narrators lament and serenade a missing young girl. How ironic that men should sing the song of sirens, luring the reader closer and closer to the shipwreck of the narrators' own lives. The Fates Will Find Their Way is a pulse-quickening opera about the loss of innocence, youth and time. Pittard displays a remarkable command of voice. She spirals back and forth in time, and through the houses and lives of her cast with a card sharp's hand. Each story seems melded to the next, and the reader is always kept guessing "where is the red queen?" A few pages in and you too will want to know the fate of Nora Lindell.
