January

Hall Institute Executive Director Michael Riccards appears on News 12 New Jersey's Power & Politics television program discussing Governor Corzine's first two years in office and the 2008 presidential campaign.

Hall Institute Communications Director Richard Lee moderates two panel discussions at the New Jersey State House in commemoration of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

February

Michael Riccards joins a group of presidential experts at Rutgers University for a panel discussion titled The Presidential Election: The New Jersey Perspective during the New Jersey Political Science Association's annual conference at the Eagleton Institute at Rutgers University.

March

In partnership with Mercer County Community College, the Hall Institute launches a public affairs television program.

Richard Lee presents papers at two academic conferences – Has Election Coverage Entered a Brave New World? at the 12th Annual Meeting of the New Jersey Communication Association and The Impact of New Jersey Newspapers on the Development of the State’s Transportation Infrastructure at the Joint Meeting of the American Journalism Historians Association and the History Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

Lee also speaks on a panel entitled Media Viewpoints at the Leadership New Jersey Seminar on Government and Politics in Trenton and as a guest speaker at two Rutgers University classes -- Mass Media, Government and and the New Jersey Leaders of Tomorrow Presidential Internship.

April

Following its successful establishment in New Jersey, the Hall Institute expands to the West Coast, acquiring the Bay Area Center for Voting Research, a non-partisan think tank based in Berkeley, California.

Michael Riccards moderates two panel discussions at the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute Spring Conference.

Riccards also appears on News 12 New Jersey's Power & Politics television program discussing the Pope’s visit to the U.S.

May

Michael Riccards is selected by Governor Jon S. Corzine to serve as New Jersey's representative on the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission.

Riccards appears in two segments for Comcast Newsmakers, discussing the presidential primaries and state issues.

A Hall Institute study on media coverage of New Jersey's female legislators finds that women lawmakers are covered less than their male colleagues, but that when they are included in media reports, they generally are treated on a par with men.

June

Hall Institute Trustee Robert P. Haney Jr. is nominated to the New Jersey State Board of Education by Governor Corzine.

The Hall Institute launches a podcast feature that offers commentary and analysis of major public policy issues.

An article written by Richard Lee on the role of music in 1968 is published in the Asociacion de la Historia Actual spring bulletin.

July

The Hall Institute's U.S. Senate Virtual Debate begins with opening statements from the candidates.

August

Richard Lee delivers the keynote address -- a lecture on media bias in the political process -- at Ocean County College's fall colloquium.

September

Michael Riccards is the featured speaker at a Camden County College lecture on the 2008 presidential campaign.

The Hall Institute begins a series of four online focus groups conducted immediately after each presidential and vice-presidential debate.

October

A chapter written by Richard Lee about media coverage during the Vietnam War is selected for inclusion in an upcoming book on war, media and communication.

Lee moderates a panel on New Jersey's System of Government at the State House.

Robert P. Haney Jr.'s nomination to the New Jersey State Board of Education is approved by the State Senate.

November

The Hall Institute's ongoing efforts to tap into the mindset of New Jersey voters continue at the New Jersey State League of Municipalities 93rd Annual League Conference with a straw poll on the 2009 race for governor.

December

A Hall Institute study concludes that the management structure New Jersey uses to invest state pension funds needs to be seriously re-examined.

Richard Lee serves as a panelist at a legislative forum sponsored by State Farm Insurance.

The Hall Institute announces plans to honor Robert P. Haney Jr. at a Gala Dinner Reception on March 5, 2009, at the Hilton East Brunswick.

Former Hall Institute intern Damian Bednarz is named "Rising Star of the Year" by PolitickerNJ for his work on the Obama presidential campaign.

The Hall Institute is a non-partisan, not-for-profit foundation established to explore social, economic, educational and cultural issues. Our weekly email newsletter is sent to organizations and individuals with an interest in the material posted on our website at www.hallnj.org.
