Greetings!
Hello, and welcome to our February edition! Here at the T1DN our year has got off to a flying start . The new leadership team has been busy with consultation projects and welcoming new volunteers; we're looking forward to our strategic planning meeting in March, to identify more ways we can provide support, information and a voice for the type 1 community.
In this edition of Yada Yada, you can read about a new report on the incidence of insulin-treated diabetes (not just type 1s but all types of diabetes), check out our new Facebook page, and have a laugh with a link to a video that many will be able to relate to! We'll also tell you more about the advocacy and consultation work we're doing in the health sector, and don't forget to fill in our readership survey if you haven't done so already...
Enjoy :)

Readership survey: one more week to go!
|
|
Thanks to everyone who has taken a couple of minutes to answer our readership survey. It's hugely helpful for us to get an idea of what our membership is like and what kinds of things you enjoy about Yada. We're leaving the survey open for one more week, so if you haven't filled it in yet, we would love to hear from you. It's really quick! A few comments from respondents so far... - 'We all know that there are lots of us with severe vision impairment due to T1 so, please, spare a thought for us and increase the size and contrast of your message.'
- 'Keep up the great work! It is really great to receive updated information on Type 1 that is actually interesting and accurate.'
- 'I just so wish I had known about you guys when my daughter was diagonsed at 22, 8 yrs ago. We received so very little information and advice. So just keep doing what you are doing as it's just great.'
- 'It's all pretty good- are you thinking of setting up a Facebook page with a link to the newsletter?'
- 'More on how health professionals can improve their service to the type 1 community.'
We have introduced some changes already, and will be reviewing all the results to look at ways of improving your Yada experience!

Incidence of insulin-treated diabetes
|
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has recently published a report on the incidence of insulin-treated diabetes in Australia during the period 2000 to 2009. During this period, 222,544 people began using insulin, of whom 77% had type 2 diabetes, 12% had gestational diabetes and 10% had type 1 diabetes. This data may challenge some commonly-held beliefs about the treatment of type 2. Click here for more interesting reading about the incidence of type 1 by age group, gender and even by Australian state/territory.
Can you guess which state/territory has the highest annual incidence per 100,000 people? It's quite surprising!

Places where the T1DN is having a say
|
|
|

In addition to providing some great resources on our website and of course the wonderful discussions that happen on Reality Check and Munted Pancreas, the T1DN has been providing some valuable input in a variety of different settings lately, making the voice of the type 1 community heard.
Here are some examples of what we've been involved in recently:
- Representation at the NDSS National Development Program Stakeholder Consultation Forum
- Representation at the Consumers Health Forum workshop on Quality Use of Medicines and the rollout of Personally Controlled Electronic Health Records (PCEHR)
- Giving feedback on a plain language statement produced by the Ketone Monitoring Project, a national project funded by Roche Diagnostics.
And there are some other important consultation projects coming up soon. We'll keep you posted!

Here's a great You-Tube video recently mentioned on type 1 diabetes blog Six Until Me. It's hilarious but it does include a couple of swear words - be warned :)
