| The Health Minister is Concerned about Type 1 D
|
|
Last month, we wrote to all state and federal health ministers and other politicians to inform them of the work we are leading to develop a Statement of Issues Affecting Australians with Type 1 Diabetes. Many of you contribited submissions to this process over recent months - and 15 people with Type 1 from all walks of life are on the Opinion Leaders Group.
We have received positive responses from all over.
A representative of the Federal Health Minister, Nicola Roxon:
"I
am delighted to learn of the development of The Type 1 Diabetes Opinion
Leaders Group and appreciate the positive contribution this group will
make in improving outcomes for Australians of all ages who live with
type 1 diabetes.
"The Government is concerned at the increasing incidence ... and
particularly the difficulties encountered by people with type 1
diabetes in managing the condition....."

| Human Volunteers Wanted for Cure Trial |
|
I'm always a bit circumspect about drawing attention to the latest mass media story about the research breakthrough for diabetic mice.
At least this latest story involves a study of human beings.
The UK's daily Mail reported the following on 14 March 2008
"A human clinical trial with hopes of finding a cure for type 1 diabetes is to start at a leading American research hospital using BCG, universally given for many years in Britain to prevent tuberculosis. ...Volunteer patients are now being enrolled for the trial at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. The aim is to find out whether promising results obtained by Dr Denise Faustman in mouse studies can be applied to human diabetes. "
The rest of the article is pretty sketchy on detail and it's not clear if it's really a cure or a vaccination to prevent destruction of beta cells.
