Help develop a new resource: Eating Disorders

Diabetes Australia-Victoria and the Eating Disorders Foundation of Victoria are working to produce a new resource, the first of its kind, about eating disorders and diabetes. Reality Check is pleased to be assisting with this project in its final stages.

Could you possibly take a few minutes to read a draft of the new resource (just 4 pages) and then answer a quick, online survey?

Everyone can help out: people with diabetes, guys, gals, people who have experience of eating disorders and people who haven’t at all, parents, guardians and health professionals are all welcome.

Go to www.realitycheck.org.au/eatingdisorders.htm to read the draft resource and complete the quick survey.

Thanks for your help.
Mountains, diabetes and pump madness

David Panofsky shares with us the story of his most recent mountainous adventure, and some musings that it inspired.

Warning alarms are coming from my insulin pump buried beneath my outer shell, fleece, and wool shirt. The sound is impossible to ignore mostly because it’s telling me something I don’t want to hear: no insulin delivery. I’m less than an hour above Camp 3 at nearly 21,000 feet on easy terrain soloing with crampons and trekking poles. It’s still blowing hard, visibility is poor, and it’s bitter cold. I’m thinking through my options and wondering why this piece of cutting-edge technology decides to give me troubles – TODAY.

High & Lowdown on... Marvellous Maxine

In a new regular feature here at Yada Yada, some Reality Checkers with slightly different d-experiences will be sharing with us a snapshot of their lives.

Maxine is approaching her 50th anniversary of getting diabetes! She answers a few questions to give us a snapshot of her life.

Our fave Swimmer fights off Shark!

Gary Hall Jnr, Gold medal Olympian, Type 1 diabetic and honourary Reality Checker is in the news again this week. Read all about his shark battle.

No mention of the big D in the story, but sometimes that’s the way we like it.
Bush Vetoes Stem Cell Research

President Bush Jnr has used his Presidential powers to veto Congress in the United States for the first time, choosing a subject close to our hearts, sadly – stem cell research.

The US does of course have the largest medical research budget in the world, not to mention some very smart scientists who want to be able to apply themselves work with stem cells to find cures for Type 1 d as well as other diseases. It is quite an advance that the Congress would get as far as approving the legislation, but disappointing (if not surprising) that Bush has vetoed their decision.

An Eye on the Cure

A seminar this week being put on by the Garvan Institute will discuss research being done to understand the genetic factors that trigger processes which cause Type 1 diabetes, as well as other diseases such as asthma and MS.

Thursday 27th July 2006
6.30pm – 8pm (doors open at 6pm with tea and coffee served on arrival)
The Hills Function Centre, Castle Hill RSL, 77 Castle Street, Castle Hill NSW.

Tony Abbott on Lantus on Sunday

Health minister Tony Abbott, interviewed by Laurie Oakes on the Sunday program last weekend, was asked quickly about Lantus.

LAURIE OAKES: Lantus, a long-lasting insulin for diabetics was approved by the PBAC in April and that hasn't gone to Cabinet yet, why the dilly-dallying?

TONY ABBOTT: Because there are some important negotiations still going on between the Government and the company about price. [....]

Look Laurie, we have a good system, it's fair to patients because we do make live saving and life enhancing drugs available at very low cost. But it is also fair to taxpayers because we can't just pay anything that the companies demand for these drugs and there's a balancing that always has to take place and that's going on now.

So that's that! Will keep you abreast of any further news. Or you can visit Reality Check's "D-Watch" for reported sightings of Lantus under $100 and other progress big and small!

That's all folks...

Don't forget to help out and have a quick read of the new eating disorders resource. Til next time ....
Cheers,
