What's Happening at the SVS Library?

Why do we study history? This is an essential question that freshmen are currently exploring in Western Studies. One of the ways that students are delving into this topic is by reading a book about the history of something. The SVS Library has more than 200 titles from which to choose for this assignment. Would you believe that we have books about the history of smiles, boredom, denim, maple syrup, popcorn and even underwear? Check out a few of our selections by going to the SVS Library page at http://svslibrary.region-12.org/home. Click on Western Studies (under Resources for SVS Courses), then click on the tab entitled "History of" Project to see some of the unique topics that our students are studying as they learn to recognize, develop, understand and apply historical thinking skills. Remember - parents can check books out of our library, so if you see a title that piques your interest, just let us know and we will send it home with your son or daughter.

Keep in Touch!

I encourage all families to take advantage of teacher conferences, which will be held on Wednesday through Friday, October 17-19. Daytime and evening conferences are available for your convenience.

The questions about curriculum that were answered at Open House can also be applied to these conferences, with the focus changing from an overall picture of teaching and learning to the individual progress of your son or daughter:

  • What will my student know and be able to do when this course has been successfully completed?
  • How has he or she progressed to date?
  • How can we work together to ensure success?

Another means of keeping in touch with Shepaug is Channel 17. Currently, two high school events are being broadcast and will soon be streamed on our website. The guidance counselors hosted an informative evening about the college process, and Mr. Perachi and I were interviewed about Shepaug on the new "Dr. Pat Show." I hope you find each of these programs to be informative resources about your student's Shepaug Experience!

Please feel free to email me, gallok@region-12.org, if you have any ideas or suggestions for our news show, website, or any means of keeping in touch with your school!

Fondly,

Kim Gallo

Principal

Shepaug Dramatics
Shepaug Dramatics will stage Richard Brinsley Sheridan's comedy of manners, The School for Scandal, in November.  The play, first produced in London in the 1770s, satirizes the malicious gossip and hypocrisy of the young and fashionable.  An "intimate theatre" presentation will modernize the play by having characters use e-mail and tweets in place of letters and published pamphlets to subvert and manipulate the reputations of foes and friends.  Auditions, open to all students, are scheduled to take place October 2 at 6:30 p.m.
Spotlight on Senior Project:

Model UN: A Diplomatic Journey

Emily Emily Deanne has been involved in the Model UN Club at Shepaug since her freshman year. As a sophomore, she was chosen as one of two Shepaug students to attend the Ivy League Model UN conference (ILMUNC) in Philadelphia. Her experience in the UNESCO Committee cemented her love of international relations.  She enjoyed
debating world issues with students from all over the world, and working to find solutions to those problems. At the end of her junior year, after another successful trip to ILMUNC, she decided to run the Model UN Club as her senior project, with Mr. Dennis as her Technical Adviser.

The year is already off to a great start. The club is planning to attend the Harvard Model UN conference in Boston this year, representing the nation of Slovenia. There is room for fourteen delegates on the trip, although two students have applied for special committees which would bring the number up to sixteen. The conference will take place from January 31 to February 3, 2013. Emily is looking forward to holding several bake sales and having a booth at the Shepaug Holiday Bazaar in order to defray the cost of the trip. She is also planning to bring in a guest speaker or arrange a trip to the United Nations during the spring semester. Emily is looking forward to having a great Model UN Club experience this year.
Shepaug Student Project Foundation

The Shepaug Student Project Foundation was incorporated in the spring of 1993 to promote extraordinary and unique educational opportunities for students at Shepaug Valley High school for special programs such as Senior Projects and foreign student exchange.

Many students need financial help to make their projects happen, and that's what the Shepaug Student Project Foundation (SSPF) provides.  Your tax deductible contribution to the SSPF will enable our students to experience the support of their community, while focusing on the true scope of their projects. This is about Connecticut people helping Connecticut kids.

Environmental Science Students Attend Book Talk
EnvironmentalOn Saturday, Septermber 29th, Shepaug students from Mr. Tiesler's Academy 9 and Environmental Science classes attended a book talk by Alex Prud'homme, author of The Ripple Effect: The Fate of Freshwater in the Twenty-First Century at the Gunn Memorial Library. Mr. Tiesler's students also displayed "glogs" (interactive web-based posters) they created illustrating issues related to water resource management, use and security. The students had an opportunity to meet Mr. Prud'homme and discuss such diverse issues as water resource management, drinking water, sanitation and health, water scarcity, water quality, gender and water, and climate change with attendees.
Peer Leadership

Twenty-six Shepaug High School students and five of their teachers assembled at the Silver Lake Conference Center on September 22 - 23 to undergo training on how to improve problem solving, effective communication, and leadership skills. The students formed three teams and were tasked with crafting action plans to bring back to their school to impact problems they identified in their school community. The Red Team is planning to conduct a "Tie Shepaug Together Tie Day" to educate the school community about the Honor Code in a fun and memorable way. The Blue Team will implement an "Adopt-A-Freshman Program" to promote the Honor Code, togetherness, and acceptance at Shepaug. Finally, the Yellow Team plans to craft a Shepaug Honor Code Promotional Program (TV shows, sticker statements, buttons, T-shirts) to foster school spirit and togetherness at Shepaug High School.
