Quote of the Month

"Self-esteem is the real magic wand that can form a child's future. A child's self-esteem affects every area of her existence, from friends she chooses, to how well she does academically in school, to what kind of job she gets, to even the person she chooses to marry."

Superintendent's Message

Dear SBUSD Parents, Guardians and Community Members,

I am proud to report that our students in grades 2-8 have completed their California Standards Tests for the 2011-12 school year.  I look forward to reporting the results when we receive them in August.  I want to thank all of you for your support and deep interest in your child's education.   I have had the opportunity to watch young students begin their pre-school or kindergarten program for many years now and watch them grow and blossom into the amazing young people who leave us to go on to middle school, high school, and university.

The students who have the very best chance at future success, do so because they are blessed with great teachers AND great parents who make it their business to assure that EDUCATION is the most important thing in their lives.  They also make sure their children come to school EVERY day, read EVERY day, have conversations at the table EVERY day about learning and life wonders.  Their parents make sure their children's lives have lots of routines, lots of love, laughter and feelings of safety.  Their parents feed them nutritious food, limit television and computer-time and spend family-time together outdoors riding bikes, hiking, playing ball, etc.

We are grateful to all of you who work so hard to make these things happen in your children's lives.  We will continue to work just as hard to make sure that your child has a first class education.

Professionally yours,

  Carol

Carol Parish, Ed.D.
District Superintendent

Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 20, students presented their Water Conservation Projects to students, parents and teachers in the auditorium.  Congratulations to the 6th Grade team!

School Spotlight - Berry

In order to support English Language Learner students, Berry has created two new after-school clubs.  The Newspaper Club encourages students to conduct interviews, research topics and write articles.  The Science Club allows students to conduct experiments, take notes and participate in hands-on learning activities.  Recently, students learned about air pressure and took part in a rocket experiment.  Thank you to the Berry team for the hard work and new opportunities for our students!

School Spotlight - VIP at Nicoloff

Parents and Staff of VIP at Nicoloff are getting in shape! A group of staff members and parents of preschool children meet after school in classrooms and are led by fitness instructor Mike Cothrine, better known as "Big Mike".

This pilot program is funded through San Diego First 5 in conjunction with Preschool for All. The program has been well received by both parents and staff. Participants keep a journal related to eating healthy, as well as participating in varying exercises. By all accounts it looks as if the program will become a fulltime program beginning next year when Preschool for All is renamed Quality Preschool Initiative.
