Greetings!
Welcome to the e-mail version of The Log. This is not intended to replace the printed Log that is delivered in the Columbia Flier. We are hoping to reach more residents by e-mail, especially those who may not receive the Columbia Flier version.
If you typically receive the paper version of The Log, it should have been delivered in the Columbia Flier this week. If you received the Flier but The Log wasn't inside, please contact me at jduvall@hickoryridgevillage.org. |
|
NEW!!! We have also included a link to a PDF version of The Log below.
We want to know which you prefer -- the e-newsletter we have been sending for the past several months, or a PDF document.
Send us an e-mail with your thoughts!

No More Dumpsters
Howard County is no longer offering dumpsters for the disposal of bulk items on "Dumpster Days." If you have bulk items that require disposal, call the county at 410-313-6444 to schedule a FREE curbside pickup. For a list of acceptable and unacceptable items, please visit www.howardcountybulkpickup.org. |

Cleanup Day Results
Columbia Cleanup Day on April 14th was a success in Hickory Ridge. We had 30 volunteers, including representatives from GS Troop 2802, Boy Scout Troop 618 and Boy Scout Pack 720. They removed enough trash from Hawthorn's Open Space to fill 25 bags! Volunteers also removed a few interesting bulk items from the Open Space, including a wheelbarrow, a hubcap, and a fence post! Thanks, everyone!

Want to Compost?
Composting is easy! It keeps valuable food scraps out of the landfill and creates a natural soil amendment/fertilizer. Howard County provides FREE compost bins to residents. Pick one up at 6751 Columbia Gateway Drive, Suite 514 or Alpha Ridge Landfill. Need guidance? Visit www.howardcountymd.gov/composting.htm or check out the County's Food Scrap help videos www.howardcountymd.gov/HowToVideos.htm. Please remember that an Exterior Alteration Application is required for all compost bins and piles. |

Aging in Place
Are you 65 or older and want to remain in your home as you age? The Opting for Independence program wants to interview you! The program is seeking Howard County residents with annual household incomes below $50,000 who live in zip codes 21043, 21044, 21045 or along the Route 1 corridor between Elkridge and North Laurel. The confidential, approximately 75-minute interview is conducted in your home at a time you select in May or June. For more information and to sign up for an interview, contact Anne Arrington at the Office on Aging at 410-313-6110 or at aarrington@howardcountymd.gov. |
|
What Should I Do..?
Visit Howard County's What Should I Do With...? website to find reuse and recycling options for just about anything you can think of! While we may not be able to recycle everything in the blue bin, our County government has done its best to find recycling and donation options for everything from batteries, to sneakers, to solar lights and baby items. Visit www.howardcountymd.gov/WhatShouldIDoWith.htmto find out more. |

Meeting with Police
On Tuesday, May 29th at 7:00 pm, our Howard County Police Department Southern District Community Resource Officer, PFC Terrence Benn, will be hosting a community meeting at The Hawthorn Center. Officer Benn will present information on pedestrian safety and general crime prevention, and will field questions from residents. If you wish to suggest an additional topic for discussion, please contact Jessamine Duvall, Village Manager at 410-730-7327 or at jduvall@hickoryridgevillage.org. All residents are welcome and encouraged to attend this meeting. |

Spring Cleaning

The mild, wet winter has left many homes in our village covered with mold and mildew. Did you know that this buildup can permanently damage the vinyl siding? Now that warmer weather is here, please examine your home's exterior and remove any accumulated mold or mildew as you complete your other Spring cleaning and gardening chores.
