The LOG

Hickory Ridge Village - The Hawthorn Center
March 29, 2012
 Greetings!

Welcome to the e-mail version of The Log. This is not intended to replace the printed Log that is delivered in the Columbia Flier. We are hoping to reach more residents by e-mail, especially those who may not receive the Columbia Flier version.

If you typically receive the paper version of The Log, it should have been delivered in the Columbia Flier this week. If you received the Flier but The Log wasn't inside, please contact me at jduvall@hickoryridgevillage.org.

Early Voting Event!

The Hickory Ridge Community Association will be hosting an "Early Voting Extravaganza" on Friday, April 13th from 5:00 - 7:30 pm. This FREE open house event will offer voting opportunities for all ages, our annual jellybean jar contest ($50 prize!), tasty refreshments, trivia, and more!

Kids can help the Association decide which animal to adopt from The Maryland Zoo while adults cast their absentee ballots for the village election.

Stop in before dinner or on the way home from work and help us reach our voting quorum! For more information, call the village office.

Remember to VOTE!

Saturday, April 21st, is Village Election Day in all ten Columbia villages. Hickory Ridge Community Association members can vote at three different times and places: at our Early Voting Extravaganza on Friday April 13, from 5:00 - 7:30 pm, at the Hickory Ridge Village Center on Friday, April 20th, from 5-7:30 pm., and at The Hawthorn Center on Sunny Spring on Saturday, April 21st from 9am to 3pm. Those who vote in person on the 13th, 20th or 21st will have the opportunity to take part in our traditional Jelly Bean Count. The best estimator takes home $50.

According to our legal documents, only one vote per household may be cast. The same applies for renters: one vote per lease. Both owner and tenant may vote, however. If your name is not listed on our printout of property owners, please be prepared with identification that verifies your residency in our village.

Village Board Candidates

Six persons have submitted candidate statements for the five available positions on the Hickory Ridge Village Board. Their statements are listed in random order in the attached document. You will also see these statements in an Election Supplement in the April 12th Flier.

Second Election Date

If we should fail to reach a quorum of votes for the Village Election on April 21st, we will call for a second election to be held at 7:00 pm on May 7, 2012 at the Hawthorn Center, in accordance with Section 1.05 of the Association's By-Laws.

Absentee Ballots

If you are unable to vote in person on April 20th or 21st, you can vote by absentee ballot. A copy of the absentee ballot is included in the paper version of this issue of The Log. You can also pick one up at the village office.

To return the absentee ballot, put a stamp on the card or insert it in a stamped envelope and mail it to us at the address on the Log's masthead. All absentee ballots must be received at the Village Office by 3pm on April 21st. If you wish to cast a secret absentee ballot, do the following:

 Mark your choice of candidates

  • Do not fill out the name and address section
  • Write "Secret Ballot" in that section
  • Place that plain envelope in another envelope
  • On the outer envelope print your name and address
  • SIGN your name over the glued flap of the outer envelope
  • Mail to Village Manager, 6175 Sunny Spring, Columbia, MD 21044

If you have questions, please call the village office at 410-730-7327.

Draft FY13 Budget

The Village Board will approve the FY2013 annual budget at their April 16 meeting. In accordance with recent changes to the Maryland Homeowners Association Act § 11B-112.2, the annual proposed budget for the Association must be submitted to lot owners at least 30 days before its adoption. Interested residents can view the proposed budget on our web site at www.hickoryridgevillage.org. Copies are also available upon request by contacting the village office by phone or by e-mail.

Changing By-Laws

The Village Board has proposed changing the association's by-laws to eliminate a village election if there are no contested seats. As you may know, we have had difficulty reaching the required number of resident votes to constitute a quorum for several years. Per our legal documents, we must publish the proposed changes to the by-laws in advance of the election.

The following changes will be included on the 2012 village election ballot (PDF format):

Proposed By-Laws Changes

Cleanup Day

This is a great community service opportunity for teens and tweens!

  • Branches must be in 4ft lengths and tied in a bundle.

Softball Players Wanted

The Inter-Village Co-Rec Softball League is looking for players ages 19 and up (especially women and couples) from all villages in Columbia. Games of slow-pitch, non-competitive softball are played on Sunday afternoons at Wilde Lake Middle School from May to August. Athletic skill is not required; our aim is to have fun in a relaxing social setting. Everyone plays. Games are a good family outing, so bring the kids to cheer us on. League-wide picnic and awards program conclude the season. Minimal registration fee. Contact Morse Solomon at 410-461-6712 or mbsolomon@verizon.net, or visit www.cindylarue.com.
