The LOG
Hickory Ridge Sign
Hickory Ridge Village - The Hawthorn Center
January 12, 2012
 Greetings!

Welcome to the e-mail version of The Log. This is not intended to replace the printed Log that is delivered in the Columbia Flier. We are hoping to reach more residents by e-mail, especially those who may not receive the Columbia Flier version.

Ladies Night Out

Gather together your BFFs and adult daughters for a night of chick flick, wine, cheese and baked goodies. Join us at The Hawthorn Center on Friday, Feb. 24, at 7:30pm for a screening of "The Proposal" with Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, and Betty White.

The charge is only $10 per person. Call us at 410-730-7327 to reserve your spot at our "cinema."

"Grow it! Eat it!"

Join the Howard County Master Gardeners at The Hawthorn Center on Wednesday, January 25th at 7:30 p.m. for a seminar on spring vegetable gardening. You'll learn how to prepare the garden soil for planting, how to prepare seeds for transplant, how to guard your plants against critters and cold weather, and which structures will best support your plants. Best of all, this program is FREE! Advance registration is required - call 410-730-7327 to RSVP.

School's Out!

Howard County Schools will be closed on February 17 for Parent/Teacher conferences, so we are celebrating with a School's Out Lunch for elementary and preschool age children and their families at The Hawthorn Center.

We will be serving a pizza lunch and providing entertainment by Daisy the Clown. What's so special about Daisy? She shows the kids how she transforms into a clown using makeup, so they won't be afraid!

The event will be held from 12 noon - 1:30 pm on Friday, February 17. Tickets must be purchased in advance at The Hawthorn Center for $5 per person. For more information, call 410-730-7327.

Village Center Plan

The Hickory Ridge Village Center Community Plan (VCCP) is finished, and has been distributed to key members of the Columbia and Howard County communities.

The VCCP was developed in response to Howard County Council Bill 29-2009 (Village Center Revitalization) which encouraged Columbia village associations to prepare a plan to be used in case any redevelopment of an existing village center was proposed.  Hickory Ridge is proud to be the first village to complete a plan under the new regulation since its passage by the County Council almost three years ago.

The VCCP was developed over a two year period by the Village Center Visualization Committee with assistance from village staff.  The plan has been submitted to Howard County Department of Planning and Zoning for their reference, along with a request that future development to the Hickory Ridge Village Center conform with the VCCP.  The plan may be viewed on our web site at www.hickoryridgevillage.org

Holiday Lighting

According to our village's Architectural Guidelines, "Holiday lighting shall not be operative prior to the 26th of November or later than the 8th of January, and totally removed by January 22nd. All other decorative and string lighting require an application." So, if you really love your lights and prefer to keep them up indefinitely, submit an Exterior Alteration Application for those decorations.

Light Recycling

Recycle old, broken holiday lights at My Organic Market (MOMs) through January 31st and receive a 25% off coupon to HolidayLEDs.com. Or, send them to Christmas Light Source for recycling.

Tree Collection

Place clean, undecorated Christmas trees at the curb for collection on your recycling day through January 20, 2012. The county will collect whole trees under 6ft or trees over 6ft that are cut in half. They will NOT take trees with tinsel, icicles or ornaments, artificial trees, or trees wrapped in plastic bags. You may also drop off your trees at the Landfill or Cedar Lane Park. Questions? Call Environmental Services at 410-313-6444.

Preschool Fair

Mark your calendar for Children's Services' annual Children on Board: Child Care & Preschool Information Fair to be held at Ten Oaks Ballroom, 5000 Signal Bell Lane in Clarksville, on Saturday, January 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, with a suggested donation of a nonperishable food item at the door for the Howard County Food Bank.

At this event, parents and caregivers can get information on child care centers, preschools, summer camps, family child care, school-age programs, infant programs, play groups, co-op nursery schools, and more. Visit www.howardcountymd.gov/children for more information.

Open Space Inputcolor logo

The Hickory Ridge Village Board wants your input on proposed uses for a 3-acre parcel of land owned by Columbia Association that sits adjacent to the Hickory Ridge Village Center.

The Board requested funds to be set aside in Columbia Association's FY13/FY14 budget to create a "gathering place" for residents, to include amenities like a bocce ball court, grills, picnic area, and bandstand. The area has also been considered as a site for a dog park, outdoor exercise facility, playfield, or community building.

Please visit www.hickoryridgevillage.org for a link to an online survey (which will also be distributed to our e-mail list) and a description of the parcel under discussion. Questions? Call the village office.

Tax Assistance

Howard County's first Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site will open in January and run throughout the 2012 tax season.

The Howard County VITA site will offer free tax assistance preparation to most taxpayers who earned up to $49,000 in 2011. In addition to free tax return preparation, the site will also offer free electronic filing. Individuals who choose to take advantage of the e-file program will receive their refunds in half-the-time compared to returns filed on paper - even faster, when tax refunds are deposited directly into a bank account.

"Through the opening of this pilot site, we take another step forward to making and keeping all Howard County residents self sufficient," said County Executive Ulman. "Working families who might otherwise pay hundreds of dollars for tax preparation and electronic filing can now use those funds to pay bills, weatherize their homes or save for their futures."

The Howard County VITA site will operate out of the North Laurel Community Center, 9411 Whiskey Bottom Road in Laurel, from January 18 through April 14 on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. An appointment is necessary and can be scheduled after January 1, 2012 This year's tax deadline is April 17, 2012.

In preparation for the site's opening, the County is also seeking volunteers to serve as tax preparers, quality reviewers, greeters and office staff. Volunteer tax preparers are trained to help with special credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit and Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled. Training and certification for volunteer tax preparers are offered for free and sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service; no prior tax preparation or accounting experience is required. Residents interested in volunteering should contact the site coordinator, Enock Guerrier, by e-mail at vita@howardcountymd.gov or by telephone at 410-313-0386.

For more information, visit www.howardcountymd.gov/VITA.htm.
