The LOG
Hickory Ridge Sign
Hickory Ridge Village - The Hawthorn Center
December 1, 2011
 Greetings!

Welcome to the e-mail version of The Log. This is not intended to replace the printed Log that is delivered in the Columbia Flier. We are hoping to reach more residents by e-mail, especially those who may not receive the Columbia Flier version.

50+ Lunch

Hickory Ridge will be sponsoring another fabulous 50+ Lunch on Thursday, December 1st from 11:30 am - 1 pm at The Hawthorn Center. Lunch is $5 per person, and includes food, drinks, and entertainment by Tasker's Chance, an instrumental trio that performs early American music and provides descriptive historical introduction to each piece. You don't want to miss it!

Be Green & $ave Green

Did you know that Howard County residents are eligible to apply for a FREE home energy audit at www.livegreenhoward.com?

All applications will be entered in to a lottery; energy audit recipients will be notified by e-mail if they have been selected. There will be multiple lotteries; applications will remain valid until the last lottery is completed. If you have questions, contact energyaudit@howardcountymd.gov.

Plus, the Community Action Council of Howard County is offering FREE weatherization services to low and moderate income families.

To apply, please visit http://cac-hc.org/CAC/CAC_Services.htm and choose "Weatherization Services." There is an income requirement. If you have questions, call Kathy True at 410-313-1181.

Cul-de-sac Parking

Any car parked adjacent to the center curb within a cul-de-sac is in violation of Howard County Code 21.221 A18 and may be ticketed by the police.

Although parking can be a problem on cul-de-sacs, emergency vehicles must have access to all homes on the cul-de-sac. School buses, trash trucks and snow plows (It won't be long now.) also need clear passage around cul-de-sac circles.

NotifyMe Howard System Launches

Howard County Government has recently launched a free notification system that allows residents to receive e-mails or text messages alerting them to road closings, severe weather, park closures, special events, and more.

NotifyMe Howard has been in development for two years, and officially launched on November 15. The service is being funded through federal homeland security grants. Every person who registers for NotifyMe Howard will automatically receive tornado warnings or other emergency alerts via text message (if a cell phone number is provided).

If you want more than just emergency information, visit www.notifymehoward.org, where you can customize which alerts you receive and how they are delivered. Users can also provide points of interest, like school or work addresses, so they can get alerts when anything important happens in that area. To quickly sign up for only the emergency-only text alerts that are sent to all subscribers, text "HOWARD" to 411911.

Senior Advisory Committee

The Columbia Association (CA) is seeking residents to serve a two-year term on the Senior Advisory Committee. The goal of this committee is to advise CA on the needs, interests and concerns of Columbia's Senior residents.

Nominees must have demonstrated interest in the senior population, be at least 55 years of age and be knowledgeable of senior programs and services in Howard County. Letters of interest should be mailed to Columbia Association, 10221 Wincopin Circle, Columbia, MD 21044,

Attn: Michelle Miller; or e-mailed to Michelle.Miller@ColumbiaAssociation.com. For more information, please call Michelle Miller at 410-715-3170.

Leaves in Streets

Most of the trees have dropped their foliage. Many of those leaves now lie in the streets. As you rake up the final piles in your yard, remember to scoop up the leaves in the street in front of your home. If they stay there through the winter, they will either wash down and clog the storm drain or provide a sodden, slippery surface for vehicles.

Whatever you do, DO NOT RAKE OR BLOW LEAVES INTO THE STREET. Howard County Code forbids it.

Toys for Tots

We will be collecting toys this month at The Hawthorn Center to benefit Toys for Tots.

This program is sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, who will deliver the toys to needy children in the community.  All toys must be new and unwrapped. You may place them in the box in our lobby during our regular business hours.

Food Bank Donations Sought

The Columbia Community Church of Seventh-Day Adventists, which meets at The Hawthorn Center on Saturday mornings, holds an ongoing collection of non-perishable food items for the Howard County Food Bank on Rt. 108.

If you want to contribute, bring your donations to The Hawthorn Center on Saturdays between 10am and noon. The church will issue you a receipt and deliver for you.
