Farewell from Superintendent Ann Monday

Dear Friends of the City of Fairfax Schools,

As my tenure as the Superintendent of the City of Fairfax Schools is ending, I cannot help but reflect on the positive things that have happened in our schools during the past five years.   Staff members and students achieved in so many ways, bringing honor to themselves and to our community. Our City schools have continued to make academic progress and to close achievement gaps. Our students have demonstrated amazing skills and talents in the arts and athletics and other activities. We have had a lot to celebrate!

I was especially fortunate to be part of the re-dedications of the newly renovated Lanier Middle and Fairfax High Schools and to mark the ten year anniversaries of the Daniels Run and Providence Elementary Schools' consolidations and renovations.   The City of Fairfax has generously invested in its schools so that we can take pride in all of our buildings.

But most of all, I got to work with wonderfully dedicated people in our City schools, at City Hall, in the School Board office and with the members of the Board. As a resident of the City, I was not always aware of the quality of services that we take for granted.   Now I am very aware and very grateful, especially for the incredible School Board we have, as I have observed first- hand how much these wonderful public servants care about our schools and our students.

I have every confidence that Peter Noonan, the new City Superintendent, will be successful. He is fortunate to have the support of School Board Chairman Janice Miller whose dedication and work ethic are extraordinary. Dr. Noonan and Mrs. Miller and the rest of the School Board will face new challenges in the years ahead, but they are prepared to do what is needed to protect the City's investment in public education and to provide great learning opportunities for all students.

Best wishes,

Ann Monday

Superintendent, City of Fairfax Schools

Welcome Adam Erbrecht, New Principal of
Daniels Run Elementary

The City of Fairfax Schools is excited to announce Adam Erbrecht, assistant principal of Providence Elementary School, will be the new principal at Daniels Run beginning July 1st.

Born in Pennsylvania, Mr. Erbrecht attended Grove City College north of Pittsburgh and began his teaching career in Atlanta. In 2003, he moved to Fairfax County where he taught third and fifth grades. He earned his Master's Degree in School Administration from the University of Virginia in 2006. He served as assistant principal at Colin Powell Elementary School for three years before moving to Providence Elementary School in the City of Fairfax, working with principal Jesse Kraft.

"I have been so privileged to work in the Fairfax City Schools this past year and am honored to continue in the city as principal at Daniels Run ES," said Erbrecht. "I look forward to becoming part of the school family as we work together to continue the great things that have already begun and dream dreams of new things to come. I am grateful to everyone who has supported me along the way and am cognizant of the trust they are placing in me in this new endeavor. I promise to serve the Daniels Run community to meet the needs of our students with the best of my ability."

"The City of Fairfax School Board is delighted Adam will stay in the Fairfax pyramid and join the Daniels Run faculty," said Janice Miller, Chairman of the City of Fairfax School Board. "Adam was highly recommended by his colleagues at both Providence and Colin Powell Elementary and brings a high level of experience and enthusiasm to this position. We are particularly pleased he will work to maximize opportunities for our two elementary schools to work together. We join with Daniels Run families and staff as we welcome him and we look forward to many successful years under his leadership."

Letter from the Chairman of the School Board

Dear City of Fairfax School parents, staff and residents,

I am sure I join many of you when I say I cannot believe we find ourselves in mid-June and at the end of the school year. It has been a year filled with a variety of experiences and excitement. Our students have matured academically and have thrived in music and the arts as well as in athletics and environmental activities.

This June we also say sad farewells to both Superintendent Ann Monday and longtime Daniels Run principal Kathy Mullenix. Both Ann and Kathy have dedicated their lives to educating and nurturing children and we are going to miss their leadership and commitment to all students. We are happy to welcome Dr. Peter Noonan as our new Superintendent, and Mr. Adam Erbrecht as principal of Daniels Run. We hope you join us in helping them become part of our City of Fairfax school family.

This year -- as well as next -- is not without challenges. As many of you are aware, after being under-enrolled for many years, the City schools have recently experienced a significant increase in the numbers of students in our buildings. This school year Fairfax High School, for the first time in its history, has an enrollment that exceeds its capacity.   For this reason, Fairfax County Schools, which the City contracts to operate its schools, installed four temporary classrooms at Fairfax High.

As numbers continue to increase at Fairfax, additional temporary classrooms are needed and will be installed this summer.   At the same time, the City of Fairfax School Board is actively advocating and working with FCPS for a boundary adjustment that will decrease student enrollment. Boundary changes are challenging for school communities and students.   Working with Fairfax County, the City School Board will do all that is possible to keep constituents informed and provide ways for stakeholders to participate in the process.   We ask for your understanding and patience as we partner with the County School Board to make decisions that serve all students and families well. We ensure you this is our first priority.

If you have questions or concern about this issue, or any other issue related to City Schools, please do not hesitate to contact us.

On behalf of the City of Fairfax School Board, I wish you all a safe and happy summer.

Regards,

Janice Miller

School Board Chairman

City of Fairfax Schools are part of a world-class school system that inspires, enables, and empowers students to meet high academic standards, lead ethical lives and demonstrate responsible citizenship.

Our next school board meeting will be July 2nd at City Hall at 7:30. All meetings and work sessions are open to the public and we welcome parents, community members and families to attend and participate.

A Special Thank You!

The City of Fairfax School Board would like to extend our deepest thanks to Ms. Miriam Bernal, a parent of a Fairfax High School student and Fairfax County Public School employee. Ms. Bernal has volunteered her precious time to translate CloseUp into Spanish for our families. We are grateful for her dedication and hard work and appreciate her time and commitment.

My Favorite Summer Activity

We asked around to see what everyone is looking forward to now that the school year is done.

"My favorite thing to do in the summer is swim!"

Toby Sorensen, School Board Member

"Picking tomatoes off the vine. Backyard water balloon toss."

Adam Erbrecht, incoming Principal DRE

"Eating fresh, seasonal seafood and reading lots of interesting books."

Ann Monday, Superintendent

"Watching my kids at play...and then joining in!" Dave Goldfarb,

Principal. FHS

"Gardening and going to the beach!"

Janice Miller, School Board Chairman

"If it's summer, it's the beach! Four generations of my family gather at our favorite beach, Ocean City."

Mary Ann Ryan, Assistant Superintendent

"Fresh food, outdoor festivities, recreation, travel, sun, catching up on reading...but I'm going to pick gardening. When August comes, however, gardening must yield to football (with apologies to Mrs. Sutterfield)"

Mitch Sutterfield, School Board Member

"Playing golf with my family. I love to be outdoors and connected to nature, family and a golf club and not  the smart phone."

Michael McCarty

Director of Parks & Recreation, City of Fairfax

"My favorite summer activity is to take my kids fishing. Our time together is what matters, and catching

anything is a bonus."

 Scott Poole, Principal

Lanier Middle School

"My favorite summer activity is undoubtedly spending time at the beach. This year my wife and I will celebrate our 30th anniversary in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic! I also love major league baseball and working in my yard so I will mix in a few more Nats games around our trip."

Dave Rohr

Fire Chief, City of Fairfax
