Letter from Chairman Miller

Dear Parents, Teachers and Residents of the City of Fairfax

The City of Fairfax School Board is issuing this special CloseUp to let you know about Fairfax County Public Schools' (FCPS) citizen advisory group -- the Facilities Planning Advisory Council (FPAC). The primary mission of this council is to advise and inform the Fairfax County School Board and staff in the development of comprehensive, long-term plans for facilities needs in the most effective and efficient way. The City of Fairfax School Board has appointed Allen Griffith, a former City school board member as our representative on this council.

The City School Board is concerned about capacity issues at all of our schools, and especially concerned about overcrowding at Providence, Lanier and Fairfax High School where future student enrollments are projected to be well over the buildings' capacities. We are working with FCPS on both short and long-term solutions. We would like you to know there is a place for you to make your voice heard about your questions regarding facilities and overcrowding.

FPAC is holding a series of meetings to solicit community input regarding all FCPS facilities -- including city owned buildings. We encourage parents from all of our pyramid schools to attend the FPAC meeting on May 22nd at Robinson Secondary to listen to committee representatives and voice concerns. More information about this meeting can be found here.  If you cannot attend the meeting, FCPS has created a blog for comments and suggestions.

City of Fairfax School Board Members plan to attend. Please join us to get your voice heard!

Here is a link to preview the FPAC presentation.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the City School Board. We also encourage you to attend our regular school board meetings on the first Monday of each month at City Hall. Meeting times and agendas can be found on our website.

We look forward to seeing you at the meeting May 22nd at Robinson Secondary at 7:00 and discussing your concerns.

Regards,

Janice Miller

Chairman of the City of Fairfax School Board

Announcement from Fairfax County Public Schools
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) will be conducting community meetings for residents to comment about a long-term strategic plan being developed by the Facilities Comprehensive Advisory Council (FPAC).

FPAC, a citizens committee appointed by the Fairfax County School Board, created a draft of a strategic facilities plan that includes 25 proposed goals addressing capacity and space use, operations and maintenance, communication, and capital improvement funding and projects. The draft plan addresses the challenges facing FCPS as school enrollment swells, demand for space and services intensifies, and funding sources to meet maintenance, renovation, and construction needs are drained.

This new plan will be used to guide decision making for capital improvements, boundary studies, and program assignment changes-issues that will impact all residents and taxpayers in Fairfax City and Fairfax County. FCPS would like to request the inclusion of the following information in your newsletter or regular communications to City of Fairfax constituents.

Feedback Sought On FCPS Facilities

City of Fairfax residents are invited to provide input for a long-term strategic plan that will help Fairfax County Public Schools prepare for critical facilities issues facing the school system in the next decade, including increasing enrollment, the availability of space to meet needs, and adequate funding to meet maintenance, renovation, and construction needs. The School-Board appointed Facilities Planning Advisory Council (FPAC) is developing the new strategic plan and encourages parents and all residents to participate in community meetings on

The facilities strategic plan is driven by issues identified in FPAC's careful evaluation of the current conditions and input from residents at a series of listening tours FPAC held in spring and fall 2011: space utilization (enrollment, capacity, and programs), operations and maintenance, capital improvement, community use, and communications.
