Two Tickets To Paradise

Okay, we are not going to paradise, but you can support SFBF and enjoy Eddie Money with Starship in concert on Friday, October 12th, at Evans Towne Center Park in Evans, GA.   Enjoy a little 80's nostalgia and make a donation to SFBF by purchasing tickets online at www.evanstownecenterpark.com. When you purchase Lawn Doctors or Stage Front Doctors tickets online using the JMS password, our supporters will receive a $5 discount off each ticket and $10 from each ticket will go to SFBF.   Children under the age of 12 are free and can enjoy the Kids Zone while you enjoy the concert.

October 2012

I am not a fan of Honey Boo Boo.   Who watches that stuff?   You're thinking... "What does that have to do with Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation?"    Well, I recently learned that recycling just ONE aluminum can saves enough energy to run a television for three hours.  (That's six reruns of Mayberry R.F.D.) Recycling is especially important to SFBF because our aluminum can recycling program generates about 10% of our annual income.  That's a lot of cans and a lot of energy saved.   In this month's newsletter you will meet some of the people that make our Can-It! program work.  Tailgaters, firefighters, and Girl Scouts are all pitching in.

Mini Arrives
Chief Joey Smith and his crew from Merriwether Fire Department hope to give SFBF's can recycling efforts a boost.  They donated their time and the materials to build a "Mini"  can wagon that can be pulled to special events.  "Mini" is dressed to the nines with grab handles from old fire trucks, can crushers, chrome accessories, and a step for the vertically challenged!  Keep a look-out for "Mini" as she makes her way to special events and conferences.  Thanks so much to our friends at Merriwether Fire Department for their Can-It spirit!
Girl Scouts Help Out
Cookies aren't the only things sweet about Girl Scout Cadette Troop 20334, one of the troops at Greenbrier Middle School.  Lauren Helling, Tori Hockert and Alyssa Jimenez have launched a project that is sure to merit a silver award, the highest honor for their scouting level. It will also benefit SFBF's Can-It! program.   This troop is conducting a year-long recycling contest at their school through PepsiCo's Dream Machine Recycle Rally, where students are encouraged to collect non-alcoholic beverage containers (plastic bottles and aluminum cans) and bring them to school to earn points redeemable towards prizes.  The girls even made a  video for their school's morning announcements.   The icing on the "cookie" is that the donated aluminum cans will go into one of SFBF's can collection trailers located on their school campus, and will benefit SFBF.  "We hope this will have a long lasting effect," said Sandy Helling, Troop Leader.  Best wishes, to these thoughtful Scouts!
Tiger Tailgaters Pitch In
Clemson's Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, which raises funds for SFBF with its annual Fireman's Challenge, is at it again.  Drew Casella, an engineering student and VP of the Clemson fraternity, is leading the can-paign to get Clemson football fans involved in  SFBF's aluminum can recycling can-paign.  They are pulling one of our Can it! collection trailers to each home game and encouraging tailgaters to pitch in and help.   Let's hope those fans are thirsty when the Tigers take on the Yellow Jackets this month.

Ring in the New

Every now and then you have one of those moments when you know you are in the right place at the right time.  This was the case for all who came to meet Stephen Lendl, as he presented SFBF with an antique bell from a 1924 American LaFrance fire truck.  Chief Lendl, now 88 and retired from the Clifton, New Jersey, Fire Department, presented the bell in honor of firefighters and the role they play both in their communities and in support of SFBF.  It was quite a picture to see him swapping stories about times past with area fire service leaders including Sgt. David Griffin,  Chief Chris James, Battalion Chief Danny Kuhlmann and Board Member Ray Visotski.  Thanks to Chief Lendl, the bell and its rich past will be part of our future.

The Heart of a Volunteer

It's hard to put a spotlight on a target that is constantly on the move, and there is none on the go more than Gary Jarriel, with the Southside Fire Department in Savannah.   This Assistant Chief of Security Operations is also an EMT, Emergency Medical Dispatcher, Firefighter and Police Officer.  He also happens to be a SFBF Board Member.  Gary is involved with several fundraisers that benefit SFBF, including the widely popular Firefighter Calendar, which depicts Savannah's hunky firefighters.   This project has raised over $50,000 in the last eight years.  Gary also helps with Southside's aluminum can recycling program and its First Annual Poker Run, scheduled this month.  Asked why he serves with SFBF, Gary replies, "Being a part of the Burn Foundation allows us (firefighters) to stay in touch with those patients that we may have rescued and transported to the JMS Burn Center.  It's the reason I do what I do."  Gary enjoys spending time with wife, Annie, and his five daughters - another reason he is a moving target.  Thank you, Gary, for what you do.

From the Heart...

I could not resist sharing this photo of my adorable granddaughter, Haven.   I admit I am shameless, but it is a grandmother's duty.  She is sporting a stick-on tattoo of our aluminum can mascot, Can-It!  This month, she and  thousands of elementary school children in Georgia and South Carolina are helping Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation raise funds for our pediatric burn fund.   With the help of their teachers and families, kids will collect aluminum cans and take them to one of our can collection trailers at a fire station in their community.   As Haven would say, "awesome."
