Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation's Second Annual Heroes Banquet honoring firefighters, volunteers and other supporters will be held on March 1, 2012. Thanks to Bowles Construction Company, we will have a few more tables for casino fun. Recently, Tommy Willis, representing Bowles' VERT team, and Lisa Smith, EMS Coordinator for Doctors Hospital, presented Dr. Jo Maypole, President of the Foundation, with five game tables.

Burn Awareness Week

This year's campaign focuses on scald prevention.  Nearly one-third of burn center admissions are scald injuries. Children, older adults, and people with disabilities are the most frequent victims.

Burn Prevention Tip

Preventing Scald Injuries

Scalds are the number one cause of burn injuries in children under 5, and the majority of the injuries occur in the kitchen and bathroom. To prevent scalds:

  • Lower your water heater to 120 degrees.
  • Never leave a child unattended in the bathroom.
  • Install safety valves or remove hot water handles in the tub/shower.
  • Cook on the back burners, turning pot handles toward the back of the stove.
  • Never hold a child while holding hot liquids.
  • Make sure children are out of your path when carrying hot liquids.

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work..."If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it."

February 2012
Greetings!

February seems like the perfect month to talk about Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation's logo, which is heart shaped.   The heart has been described as a broken heart by some, because it has two sides.  One is the hot-red color of flames and the other is the cool-blue of water.  I have heard many interpretations.  The red side is thought to represent the fire that often affects the burn survivors that we serve.  The blue side is said to represent the water that cools the fire or perhaps a tear shed for those we help.  However you choose to interpret the heart, our simple tagline says it best - burns hurt, we help.  It is certainly seen as a symbol of comfort to the many patients and families that we serve thanks to your support.
A Mother's Heart

For many, September 11th is a date that conjures up memories of burning towers in New York, but for Pat Loar it's the day she'll remember forever when she was awakened at 3 a.m. with news that her daughter and grandson had been in a car accident in Anderson, SC.  Though Pat's 32-year-old daughter, Megan Woods, was flown to the Burn Center with critical burns over 40 percent of her body, her three-year-old grandson, Will, sadly, did not survive.  Pat and her husband, Dick, of 44 years, made the eight hour drive from their West Virginia home to Augusta in complete silence, and for four months found respite at the Chavis House.

"This is a wonderful, wonderful place," said Pat. "It became a real family to us.  Our stomachs, souls and minds were taken care of."  Pat describes the Chavis House as being immaculately clean and a place where someone is always there to listen to you, hug you and understand how you are feeling.

"God puts us where we need to be.  Those of us who had been around for a while took others underneath our wings.  We knew which step a family member was going through by the look in their eyes.  When someone died, we all mourned."

After four months Megan was discharged to go home. The Burn Foundation Family wishes Megan continued good health as she heals from her most recent surgery.

The Heart of a Volunteer

David Griffin, a Sergeant for the North Augusta Department of Public Safety, has been a volunteer for Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation for over two decades. His service began in 1989David Griffin when he volunteered to work at the first burn survivors' reunion.  Since then, David has held volunteer roles as both the Chair and Vice Chair of the Board. In 2010, when David's term on the board ended, he was awarded the title of Emeritus for his service. As one of our longest serving volunteers, David often shares stories about the many people and events that have helped shape the history of the Foundation. One of his funniest tales is about an event that occurred at the SC State Firefighters Association's annual meeting in Myrtle Beach, SC. As a regular attendee to this conference, David has established a tradition of collecting aluminum cans for the Foundation's recycling program. For several years, he has volunteered to pull one of our can trailers to the conference, parking it near the hotel pool. During his "pool duty" David encourages anyone enjoying a "cool one" to toss their empty cans into the can trailer. A few years back, a fellow firefighter took great delight in announcing David's room number to the conference delegates and encouraging them to throw their empty aluminum cans onto the balcony of David's room.  Although his nights were often interrupted by the clatter of cans, David said "it was for a good cause."   We appreciate David's years of service and his dedication to the mission of Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation.

A Powerful Heart
Jefferson Energy Cooperative, located in Wrens, Georgia, is a member owned cooperative business that markets energy to improve the quality of life for its members who reside in an 11 county area.  This year marks their 75th year of service.  One marvels at how a business can weather the ups and downs of the economy for nearly eight decades.  The answer is no doubt a complex one, but one of their strengths is clearly the people they hire.   They have been supporters of Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation for many years.Jefferson Energy  Recently, Steve Chalker, Director of Public Relations for JEC, presented the Foundation with a check for $6160.  This was contributed by JEC employees through a voluntary payroll deduction program that allows employees to choose Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation as their charity of choice.  Chalker noted that, "With almost 90% of the employees giving through payroll deduction, it is a painless way for them to support an organization that is important to them." JEC takes pride in being dedicated to doing an outstanding job every time.  Once again, their employees did an outstanding job for the Foundation.  We are very fortunate to have them in our community and among our "powerful" supporters.

An Enduring Heart

Housemother Rachel Thorson is a young 76-year-old with a beautiful smile and sweet spirit. Rachel began working as a housekeeperRachel for the Burn Foundation in 2000. Her role has grown to one that is cherished by everyone she encounters.  This great-grandmother instantly becomes mother to every guest at the Chavis House.  When asked what she likes best about her work with the Burn Foundation, Rachel replied, "everything!"

"I love all of the people", exclaimed Rachel. "You get so attached to everyone that you hate to see them leave, but you are happy to see them get on with their lives."

And we're happy to have Rachel here to welcome the next guests with open arms as well.

From the Heart...

By the time you receive this newsletter there will be just ten days left before Valentine's Day. A sometimes much maligned holiday, Valentine's Day is often criticized for being too commercial.  It is a favorite holiday of mine, but then I have been accused of thinking with my heart rather than my head.   I guess I am a true "romantic" because I still remember my first Whitman's Sampler, delivered to me by a nervous fourth grader named Zachary.  It was a really big day.  I don't remember the little card that was attached, but I do remember the way it made me feel.  Isn't it funny how in the course of our lives, filled with countless moments, we remember those events most in which we were changed by the actions, good or bad, of another.

Sending heartfelt love from the SFBF staff,

Jo
