Th
anksgiving Burn Prevention Tip:

Turkey Fryers

Determine how much oil you will need by first filling your container with water, then lower your bird into the water and note the level on the pot. This will reduce the risk of having oil overflow from your container. And always be sure to keep children and pets away from the fryer as well.

November 2011
Greetings!

I pride myself in forward planning. I am always looking ahead at what opportunities might be on the horizon. I even believe in an occasional "psychic clearance sale" just to weed out that tendency to always-do-what-you-have-always-done. The staff and I are currently taking a look at this newsletter.  We are evaluating the newsletter format and features to see if it is effective. As Dr. Phil, of Oprah fame, says, "How's that working out for you?" Let me know what you think. If it "ain't broke" we will not change a thing but if it is, we will fix it!

Mission Possible

February 21, 2011 is a day forever seared in the hearts and minds of Perry and Marcia Kirkland. Perry, a volunteer firefighter with the Loco Community Fire Department in Lincoln County, GA, responded that morning to a grass fire. But the fire moved quickly and suddenly Perry was the victim of a burn injury covering 27% of his body, both 2nd and 3rd degree. He spent several weeks in the Joseph M. Still Burn Center and endured three skin grafts.

Though Perry's wife, Marcia, and daughter, Kimber, did not require assistance for lodging in the Chavis House, they frequently enjoyed the meals provided through the SFBF Meals Program. For Marcia, the meal times were opportunities to bond with families of other burn survivors.

Perry is doing much better and has returned to work at Boyd Management. He and Marcia paid a visit to the SFBF recently with a generous gift in hand. The youth and children at their church, Loco Baptist, held a "Crème Pie in the Face" fundraiser and netted $395 for the SFBF. Perry & Marcia added another $1,000 in honor of the paid and volunteer firefighters of the City of Lincolnton and Lincoln County fire departments.

"We were fortunate that we lived close by," said Marcia. "But the Burn Foundation is here to help those who don't have help, who financially have nowhere to go. Whatever we can do to help and give back, that's what we want to do."

A Special Lady

This month's Volunteer Spotlight is on Betty Johnson, a member of West Acres Baptist Church in Evans, GA. Betty has been volunteering with the SFBF Meals program every Monday for the past nine years.

"I love meeting the people in the Burn Center and helping anyone I can," said Betty. "The most memorable time for me as a volunteer was the Imperial Sugar Plant explosion. I became very close to the families during that time - especially the Fraziers."

Betty recently had surgery and is retiring from her volunteer work with the SFBF. We are grateful for Betty's service to the SFBF and the hundreds of lives she impacted with her giving attitude.

Faces of Fire

Board Member, Princella Lee-Bridges, was selected to be in the NFPA's Faces of Fire campaign which helps promote the use of automatic fire sprinklers in one- and two-family homes. In March of 1992, Princella suffered burns on 49% of her body when she returned to her burning home to help rescue her daughter. Read Princella's story at

No Flip-Flopping

It is difficult to describe the hard work and dedication that Anthony Keisler brings to two annual fundraisers in Lexington, SC. This humble gentleman who chairs the committee for The Benefit Bike Run and the Jeffrey Chavis Golf Tournament was honored last year by the Lexington County Council for his volunteer fundraising efforts on behalf of SFBF.   What is the reason for his success? Everyone has trouble saying "no" to this nice guy known for his laidback style and flip flops. However, there is no flip-flopping when Anthony commits to an event supporting SFBF. He and his group of dedicated volunteers get the job done.

The last word...

As I close this newsletter, Augusta is still mourning the death of motorcycle deputy, J.D. Paugh, who was shot when he stopped to check a vehicle parked on the roadside. Although I never met him, I felt great pride the day of his funeral as hundreds lined the roadside to honor Deputy Paugh. What is it about some deaths that cause a whole community to feel a sense of loss? Is it because we owe them a debt that can never be paid? Because law enforcement officers, firefighters, and military professionals work daily to ensure our safety, we can live securely.  When we lose one of them, we lose a member of our extended family. This Thanksgiving Day, I plan to give thanks for those who protect us each and every day.
