SeaSquared Charters     Marathon Family Fishing     Marathon Shark Fishing     Marathon Tarpon Fishing

Greetings!

We're into Capt. Chris' three favorite months for fishing, and he's as giddy as a schoolgirl!

During April, May and June fishing is at its finest for just about every species we target in Marathon.

Please scroll down for a preview of what's catching PLUS what's new with SeaSquared!

You can also see what's happening in the Daily Fishing Reports section of our website.  If you subscribe to our blog, you will receive an email each time a fishing report is posted.

Spring has sprung and the fishing's fine!

Snapperpalooza
All the snapper begin their annual spawn on the reef, which makes them ultra aggressive.

Flag yellowtails - fish over 24 inches - are common.  The largest yellowtail caught on the SeaSquared in 2011 was landed on May 21 by Pepe Kirby from Fort Pierce FL.  The fish measured 26 inches and weighed six pounds.  A monster, when you consider the average yellowtail is 14 to 15 inches and about a pound and a half.

Mutton snapper appear in huge numbers on the reef and wrecks.  They're relatively easy to catch, as they too are quite hungry.  And, there are lots of big mangrove snapper on the reef, with some fish approaching six and seven pounds.

Grouper season
The first of May heralds the opening of grouper season.

Yippee!

If this winter is any indication, it will be an outstanding bite on the reef.  If you've fished with us, you know we catch grouper in the same areas as yellowtails.  It makes for a great day of varied fishing with delicious rewards.

Dolphin and wahoo
The annual dolphin run will be at its peak during April, May and June.

Judging from the wintertime early dolphin catches, the bite is beginning to shape up nicely.  I've already heard of a couple of fish in the 40-pound class coming back to the dock.

There has also been an extraordinary amount of wahoo, which is a great bi-catch while searching for mahi-mahi.

Permit: the perfect gamefish
Another great sport fish - the permit - are commencing their yearly congregation on the Thunderbolt wreck and Seven Mile Bridge rubble.

One of the most sought after species we have in the Keys, permit round out a fine day of reef fishing.  And, after an hour of tugging on them, you'll need a good massage!

Tarpon season
The tarpon made an early showing at the Seven Mile and Bahia Honda Bridges this year.  They are typically here into the middle of June, although mid-April through May is the peak of the run.

We fish for tarpon at Bahia Honda Bridge, where we find the population to be greater and more active.  Last year, we averaged three fish brought to the boat per trip.

We offer three tarpon trips daily ... 7 to 11 am, 11:30 am to 3:30 pm and 4 to 8 pm.  The cost is $525.

This year we will be participating in the FWC's Tarpon Genetic Recapture Study.

Shallow water shark fishing
Shallow water shark fishing in Florida Bay really crests this time of year, with large quantities of mostly lemon and blacktip sharks to test your strength.

SeaSquared Charters practices 100% catch-and-release shark fishing using non-harmful circle hooks.  All sharks are released unharmed.

Shallow water shark fishing is an exhilarating experience for all ages and abilities.  We have hosted shark wranglers from age 4 to 90!
