It's not everyday one of your sports heroes calls to book a fishing charter!
With a week left before his son, Cody, heads back to the University of Florida, Bucky Dent brought him to Marathon for his first-ever deep-sea fishing experience.
Bucky Dent earned two World Series rings as the starting shortstop for the New York Yankees in 1977 and 1978, and was voted the World Series MVP in 1978. I'll never forget his home run in a tie-breaker game against the Boston Red Sox at the end of the 1978 season.
Today, Bucky owns and oversees Bucky Dent's Baseball School in Delray Beach Florida.
Bucky Dent's Baseball School is the most well-respected school and baseball camp in the nation. Under the direct supervision of Bucky Dent and Larry Hoskin, Bucky Dent's Baseball School is committed to helping students improve their game and become better players.
Cody is following in his Dad's footsteps as a junior in the Gator's baseball program. His eyes are on the prize, and he'd most like to join the Yankee roster someday.
But enough about baseball. Bucky and Cody were on the SeaSquared to go fishing!
Dolphin was the target species today, so we headed straight to the blue water off Marathon. Jason had netted quite the haul of ballyhoo over the last couple of days, so we were all set.
We went as far as 35 miles out and spent a couple of hours looking for signs of dolphin. We eventually found a group of birds working the surface at 20 miles.
And, it was the mother lode of dolphin!
Every bait that hit the water got eaten right away. Fish after fish came into the boat until the deck looked like a blood bath. If you've ever fished for dolphin, you know they make quite the bloody mess once they're gaffed.
In the end, Bucky and Cody caught 19 dolphin in the 10- to 25-pound range. One shy of their 20-fish limit, they left a token behind for the fish gods. They had so much dolphin to take back to Boynton Beach, they had to buy a bigger cooler!
While the guys watched and waited for me to clean their fish, our resident tarpon made an appearance and dined on some of the scraps.
Bucky and Cody invited us to join them at Porky's BBQ in Marathon where we enjoyed some of their dolphin cooked blackened style. Delicious!
We all agreed, the Dents' dolphin fishing trip with SeaSquared Charters hit a home run!
