| Education: Overview of results from Durex Sexual Wellbeing Global Survey |
A new survey performed by Durex shows that 60% of Americans, both men and women, are more likely to have intercourse for the first time without a condom. It was also discovered that 1 in 5 Americans indicated that they were unsure if their partner was infected with an STD.
The average number of partners in a lifetime for Americans ranged from 20 partners for men and 10 for women. The number for men was higher in America than in Mexico, France and Britain. For women it was even with France and Britain but higher in comparison to Canada or Italy.
The overall conclusion is that continued sexual education is necessary for audiences of all ages in order to ensure that STI cases remain as low as possible.

Awareness: STIs: Viral, Bacterial or Parasitic/Fungal? | |
Just like the common cold can have its origins through a virus or bacteria, so can STIs. Most people know a few names of STIs, such as genital herpes or chlamydia, however most don't know that STIs can be classified into three families: Viral, Bacterial, and Parasitic/Fungal. Viral STIs include Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), Hepatitis B and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Viral STIs ordinarily involve many body parts at the same time and a virus is passed person-to-person through sexual activity or skin-to-skin contact. In the case of Hepatitis B and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) sharing items like razors, needles or toothbrushes can also spread infection.
Bacterial STIs are caused by bacteria being passed by person-to-person contact during sexual activities. Two of these infections, chlamydia and gonorrhea, are most commonly found in people ages 15 - 29. As well, gonorrhea is often transmitted at the same time as chlamydia. The other bacterial STI is syphilis.
The STIs that fall into the parasitic/fungal family are no less important but the infection names might not be as widely known. Infection is spread when a parasite, a small creature/bug potentially naked to the human eye, is passed through sexual activity. Included in this family are trichomoniasis (trich), pubic lice (crabs), and scabies (mites). While all are passed on through sexual activity, trichomniasis is also known to spread by sharing sex toys.
And finally while not technically considered a STI, yeast infections can be passed through sexual contact in some instances. A part of the parasitic/fungal family, a yeast infection takes place when there is an overgrowth of naturally occurring yeast in the female body called Candida.
