Education:  DC FC2 Female Condom Program Quantifiable Success

Did you know that half of the 35 million adults living with HIV and AIDs are women?  It's interesting to note that women are deemed at greater risk of heterosexual transmission of HIV because they are biologically twice more likely to become infected with HIV through unprotected heterosexual intercourse, than men.

A recent analysis conducted by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Washington DC (featured in the current issue of AIDS and Behavior) showed that the Female condom program prevented enough HIV infections in the first year alone to save over $8 million in future medical costs, above the cost of the program.

"These results clearly indicate that delivery of, and education about, female condoms is an effective HIV prevention intervention and an outstanding public health investment...."

The FC2 Female Condom® is the only approved, female-initiated method to prevent both sexually transmitted infections (including HIV/AIDS) and unintended pregnancy.

Did you know that sex contributes to good health?  Provided that safe sex is practiced in order to avoid STIs, your emotional and physical health benefits from being sexually active.  Check out some of these little known facts.
  • Sex causes the brain to release endorphins - the body's natural pain relievers
  • Having sex takes up about as much energy as walking up two flights of stairs, so sex is rarely dangerous. But if you have any health-related concerns, consult your physician or other health-care professional.
  • Sex burns fat and boosts your immune system
  • Sex relieves stress and makes you feel good

Awareness: Rise of STIs among Senior Citizens

While it might come as a shock to some people, our senior citizens are more sexually active than they have been in the past.  Reasons for this include drugs that correct the effects of erectile dysfunction, making sex a reality for aging males.  As well, according to Britain's Daily Mail adults over 50 are the fastest-growing demographic when it comes to online dating.  Online dating helps facilitate older divorcées or those who have lost their spouses to connect with other singles.

Consequently British studies as well as ones done in North America show that there has been a distinct rise in HIV, syphilis, Chlamydia and other STDs among older adults.  Twenty percent of the United Kingdom's HIV cases are in patients age 50 and up which is up from 11 percent in 2001.  Similarly, according to the CDC in 2010, syphilis cases are up 183 percent and Chlamydia jumped 192 percent from a decade ago.

As for the reasons behind the rise in STI cases, the most common is due to unsafe sex.  From a female perspective some older women who can no longer get pregnant may think that contraceptives are no longer necessary.  Whereas older men may feel that a condom contributes to erectile dysfunction.

Regardless of the reasons, it is necessary for our health care providers to encourage senior citizens to continue an active but SAFE sex life.

FC2

Did you know that the female condom has been available in North America since the 1990's?  A great alternative to the male condom, the female condom allows women to take charge of their health.  FC2 is Female Health Company's latest version of the female condom.  The FC2 is a one-time use female condom made from nitrile that provides dual protection from both STIs and unintended pregnancies.  The benefit?  Added protection.  When used correctly, the female condom provides broader physical protection than the male condom.
