| Education: Condom use rises among teens and young adults |
The Statistic Canada report released in March shows that 68 per cent of sexually active Canadians aged 15 to 24 reported using condoms in 2009-2010, compared to 62 per cent in 2003.
The Canadian Community Health Survey for 2009-10 indicated that the number of youth and young adults, who reported having sexual intercourse at least once, was comparable to the numbers in 2003.
Even with the statistics showing a rise in condom usage, experts remain concerned. The numbers still indicate that three in 10 are not using protection when they're having sex which is worrisome when sexually transmitted infections is more common in youth and young adults than any other age category.
Interestingly, condom usage was 80% for 15- to 18-year-olds, whereas the number dropped to 63% for those between the ages of 20 to 24. There is no one reason for this however one possibility is that the younger audience view condoms more for birth control and the young adults view their relationships as monogamous and use other forms of contraception.
Condoms are multipurpose. They are a form of birth control and if used properly can protect against STIs. It is necessary to understand that a person can be infected with an STI and not show any symptoms for a long time. As youth and young adults remain as a high risk to contract STIs it is necessary to continue educating them on the added benefits of using a condom.

Awareness: Global Condom Shortage | |
It's hard to believe that in this day and age there could be a worldwide condom shortage. Based on a number of factors, the industry has felt pressure with not being able to supply, and increasing prices. The factors are based on increased demand by African nations which could be considered positive long term (in that more individuals are using condoms), but short term it could be devastating. Specifically, countries such as Uganda and Kenya have battled with serious supply issues recently.
As well, one of the largest condom manufacturing facilities that made roughly 50-60% of the Durex condoms closed last summer, due to legal disputes. It is estimated that the plant made an estimated 42% of total worldwide supply. While African and European nations have felt supply and demand issues for a while, it has taken some time to hit North America. We now feel the "ripple affect" of supply issues. Due to tight supply over the past year, it is safe to assume that condom prices will increase. Some popular brands have increased prices to Public Health by more than 40% in North America. It is important that Health clinics have a good supply of condoms on hand during the balance of the year, and allow additional lead-time where possible. Pamco has made the commitment to our customers that we will only raise our pricing if our costs increase substantially. For more information, contact us at PAMCO. |
