Awareness: Young People and Condoms | |
Almost half of all new HIV infections worldwide occur in people ranging in age from 15 to 24. Researchers Dr. Cicely Marston and Eleanor King conducted a study to understand qualitative factors that might explain these people's sexual behaviour and why they may engage in unsafe sex.
The results of their study were published in The Lancet in late 2006. What is most striking is the finding that despite studying young people from Mexico, Australia, South America and Britain, there were similar themes or social forces that seem to shape all young people's sexual behaviour. Marston and King categorized seven common themes.
- Young people subjectively assess the risk a sexual partner presents based upon that partner's appearance as "clean" or "unclean".
- Sexual partners can have an important influence on all types of young people's behaviour.
- Condoms can be stigmatizing and associated with a lack of trust (ie. when a partner suggested condom usage to a new partner).
- Gender stereotypes are crucial in determining social expectations and behaviour (ie. males were expected to be sexually active, females were expected to be chaste).
- There are rewards and penalties for sex from wider society (ie. young people obtained elevated social status in some cases by complying with gender expectations).
- Reputations and social displays of sexual activity or inactivity are important (ie. many young people will feign ignorance or experience about sex to fit in with peers).
- Social expectations hamper good communication about sex. When asked why she did not discuss condom use with prospective partners, an Australian girl responded, "You don't want to assume that you are going to go all the way".
The study's findings also lead Marston and King to submit that the reasons why young people do not use condoms are, in some cases, much more complex than simply "ignorance" and a lack of available product. The researchers suggest that health professionals need to consider local knowledge gaps, gender inequalities and stereotypes as well as views about condoms such as how they could be stigmatizing for local young people in various settings.
Marston and King assert that their themes can be used as an evidence-based social checklist for health professionals to use as a starting point when conducting a local needs assessment and developing local programs for clients.
By addressing education, condom availability and social factors, health professionals can influence the adoption of healthy behaviours among sexually active young clients and reduce STIs.
