Tips for Successful EHR Implementation
By: Chris Torregosa | |
With government stimulus money now available to hospitals and clinics, many groups are purchasing and implementing an EHR system. Some implementations go smoothly and achieve their goals while others struggle or stall due to inexperience and frustration with the selected system. Some tend to fall short due to limited resources or IT issues. Many groups experience little or no success at all. These groups then begin to contemplate whether it is a problem with their staff learning the system, the workflow processes within the group, or simply the EHR system's abilities to meet their requirements. Regardless of a group's size, many implementation issues are common throughout. Like any new journey that requires certain knowledge, there is much to learn and many things that can go wrong without proper direction. Here are a few tips to help ensure a successful EHR implementation:
1) Work as a team.
Football fans know that any given play can't be run on the field without everyone completing their assigned role. The quarterback can't throw or hand off the ball unless his offensive line is providing the proper protection from the opposing defense. The same team concept should be applied to an EHR implementation. Navigating through an EHR implementation is not a solo task. Business as Unusual
By: Gary Bell, LFACHE | |
Almost daily, healthcare systems and hospital chief executive officers receive information on possible changes in reimbursement, reporting requirements, regulations, possible changes to the proposed changes, budget debates(translation--more reimbursement cuts), and if this is not enough, a looming Supreme Court decision that could force providers to rethink their strategies.
With this in mind, it is more important than ever not to lose focus on the reason healthcare systems and hospitals exist-to serve the needs of patients. No matter what comes across each leader's desk, hospitals must conduct business as usual.
This is a challenging time for each of us. At Coker, we believe United States' health delivery is the best in the world and we want to do our part by assisting you. On an as-needed basis, Coker provides...click here to read the full article. |

Lining Up a High-Quality Medical Staff
A comprehensive medical staff development plan should establish a framework for meeting community and health system needs. As economic, competitive, and legal pressures continue, an effective approach to planning and execution is required to meet these identified needs. However, determining the most appropriate physician mix and quantity can be a challenging task. A Community Needs Assessment (CNA) provides an analysis presenting opportunities and benefits to strengthen your position of physician supply and demand. Physicians are crucial assets to any hospital/system. Therefore, attracting high-quality physicians that are a good match for the hospital will increase your recruitment and retention rate. This timely session helps you adequately prepare for strategies affecting timing, alignment, revenue/expense considerations, impact on compensation, and necessary recruitment activities for success.
Knowledge Nuggets:
- Identify the fundamentals and goals of a Community Needs Assessment
- Apply helpful tools for successful planning and execution of medical staff development
- Explore alignment considerations and strategies for hospital-physician employment relationships
- Prioritize recruitment and efforts and develop strategies that attract and retain quality physicians
- Discuss how the anticipated physician shortage and ACO's might impact your overall development plan
