Revelation 19:11-21:5

19:11-14 John saw heaven standing open and there was a white horse with a Rider named Faithful and True. He judges with justice (not mercy) and makes war. He has eyes like fire (remember 1:14) and many crowns on His head. The name written on Him is known by no one but Himself. He's wearing a robe dipped in blood and "His name is the Word of God." There is a heavenly army on white horses following this Rider.

15-16 A sharp sword comes from His mouth and with this sword He strikes down the nations. John quotes Psalm 2:9, "He will rule them with an iron scepter." This Rider is King of kings and Lord of lords. He "treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God."

(remember the winepress in 14:19-20)

v. 17-18 An angel stood in the sun and called out to the birds to come and eat the flesh of kings, generals, horses and riders, all people small and great who would soon be killed by the Rider on the white horse.

v. 19-21 Then John saw the beast with the 7 heads and 10 horns along with the kings of the earth and their armies gathered together to make war against the Rider on the white horse. But both the beast and the false prophet (who deluded the people who bore the mark of the beast) were captured and thrown alive into the lake of fire. Their armies were killed with the sword that came out of the mouth of the Rider on the white horse. All the birds descended to eat the flesh of the dead.

20:1-3 An angel came from heaven holding the key to the Abyss and he had a chain that he used to bind the devil. The devil was thrown into the Abyss so he could not deceive the nations for 1,000 years. But after that he would be released for a short time.

1 John 3:1-4:21

Last week John warned his readers about the antichrists that were already among them. But if the antichrists are so wrong, how can the readers know that they have it right? Is it possible for them to have assurance of salvation? John will explain in great detail not only what they can know but also how they can know it.

3:1-3 John addresses his readers as "children of God" and speaks of the great love the Father "has lavished" on them. The world does not "know" them because it did not "know" God. They are children of God "now" in the present. What they will be (after they die or when the Lord returns) they do not yet know. What they do know is that when He appears they will be like Him and will see Him as He is. The believers all share this hope in Christ and they are to purify themselves just as Christ is pure.

v. 4-6 Everyone who sins breaks the law. Believers are not sinless but Christ came to take away their sins. There is no sin in Christ. People who sin have not really seen or known Christ. But people who are in Christ have seen Him and do know Him.

v. 7-8 Whoever does what is right is righteous just as Christ is righteous. Whoever does what is sinful is of the devil who has been sinning since the beginning. But Jesus appeared so He could destroy the devil's work.

v. 9-10 Those who are in Christ will not go on sinning because God's seed (Christ) is in them. They have been born of God. In class we talked about how believers still commit sins. However one who is "born of God" has a different relationship to sin than they had before their conversion. Sin is no longer acceptable to them-- their desire is to separate themselves from sin.

John tells them how they can tell the children of God from the children of the devil. They need to know this so they can discern who the antichrists are.

child of God = does what is right + loves his brother

child of the devil = doesn't do what is right + doesn't love brothers

There seems to be no neutral position. One is either a child of God or of the devil.

Since ancient times the Bible has been read aloud to groups of people who were eager to hear the words of Life. We're really no different today. Believers still look to the Bible for wisdom and instruction. We belong in the Word together. Thank you for your participation in these classes. I hope you will pass this email on to others and invite them to attend a Bible study.

Grace and peace,
Sandy Blank

Revelation 19:11-21:5

20:4-6 John saw thrones on which judges were seated. He saw the souls of people who had been beheaded because of their testimony for Jesus and because of the word of God. These people must have lived during the 3 ½ year reign of the beast because John says they had not worshiped the beast nor did they receive his mark on their foreheads or their hands. This is a special group of martyrs, for John says "the rest of the dead did not come life until the thousand years were ended." This is the first resurrection. This particular group of martyrs will be raised first and serve as priests of God and Christ, reigning with Him on earth for 1,000 years. They will never die again because "the second death has no power over them."

v. 7-10 After the 1,000 years are over Satan will be released from his prison in the Abyss and will once again deceive the nations of the earth, gathering them for battle against the Lord. This is a huge army "like the sand on the seashore." They march across the earth and surround the city that God loves (Jerusalem). But this enormous army is devoured by fire that comes down from heaven. Then the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire where the beast and false prophet had been thrown a 1,000 years earlier. "They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever."

v. 11-15 Next comes the judgment. John saw a great white throne and someone seated on it. The earth and sky were gone, there was no place for them. All the dead stood before the throne and were judged according to their deeds that were recorded in "the books." Another book was opened that is called the book of life. The sea gave up the dead that were in it and so did Hades (the grave). Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire which is "the second death." All the people whose names were not written in the book of life were also thrown into the lake of fire.

21:1-5 Finally, John sees a new heaven and a new earth. The former ones are no more. There was no sea on this new earth. He saw the "Holy City, the New Jerusalem" come down from God beautifully dressed as a bride. A loud voice from heaven said, "Now the dwelling of God is with men and He will live with them. ... There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." The One seated on the throne said "I am making everything new!"

That's all for this time. We'll finish the book of Revelation next week and then take two weeks off.

readtobelieveThursday Read-to-Believe Class (continued)

1 John 3:1-4:21

3:11-13 The message they heard from the beginning, when they first heard the gospel, was to love one another. Must not be like Cain who murdered his brother. Cain did this because his own actions were evil and his brother's were righteous. Cain hated his brother. The believers should not be surprised if the world hates them.

v. 14-15 The way they know that they've passed from death to life is because they now love their brothers. John is not saying that loving their brother causes them to pass from death to life. Jesus is the reason they are now alive. It's not their own love for others that saves them. Love for others is merely the evidence that they have passed from death to life. "Anyone who does not love remains in death." (they were already in death.) Even hating a brother is the same as murdering him and murderers do not have eternal life.

v. 16-22 How can they know what love is? Jesus showed them by laying down His life for them. They should lay down their lives too. John gives a practical example of how to do this-- giving material possessions to the needy. Their love must go beyond mere words and into action. Actions and truth. They can know they belong to the truth by looking at their actions. Their actions serve as evidence that they really are God's children. Then their hearts can be at rest and they can have a clear conscience whenever their hearts condemn them. God knows the truth better than their heart does. With a clear conscience they can come before God and receive whatever they ask because they obey His commands and do what pleases Him.

v. 23-24 What are the Lord's commands? We said last week that this is something other than the Ten Commandments because the Jews never came to know Christ by keeping the Ten. The Lord's commands are:

     (1) "to believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and

     (2) to love one another as He commanded us."

Those who obey these commands live in Christ and Christ lives in them. And how can they know for certain that Christ lives in them? "We know it by the Spirit He gave us." This is similar to Paul saying that the Spirit testifies with their spirits that they are children of God and heirs of His kingdom. (Romans 8:16)

4:1-3 Don't believe every spirit. Some are from God, some are not. Many false prophets are out in the world. We talked in class about mediums and psychics. Are they from God or from the devil? John tells us how we can know. Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus came in the flesh is from God. But those who do not are not from God. To say that Jesus came in the flesh is to say that He was born a physical human being and truly is the Son of God. Not everyone will be willing to acknowledge that. Many deny it either openly or more deceptively. The spirit of the antichrist denies that Jesus came in the flesh.

v. 4-6 The readers are from God and have overcome these antichrists because the Spirit in them is greater than the one who is in the world. They did not overcome by doing something but rather by being in Christ, filled with His Spirit. The overcoming was done by Christ on their behalf.

The false prophets and antichrists speak from the viewpoint of the world because they are from the world, not from God. But the readers are from God and whoever knows God listens to them, but whoever doesn't know God doesn't listen to them. This how they can recognize the Spirit of truth from the spirit of falsehood.

v. 7-8 Love comes from God, not from people. Everyone who loves has been:

     1) born of God

     2) knows God.

Those who don't love don't know God. John seems to be saying that people cannot love without first knowing love from God. They don't have it within themselves. They get it from God and then can pass it on to others. People who don't know God simply don't have love to give. God does not just do loving things-- He actually is love.

v. 9-12 God showed His love by sending Jesus into the world so the believers could live through Him. This is love: not that people loved God, but that God loved people enough to send Jesus as an atoning sacrifice for sin. Since God loved them that much they also should love each other. No one has ever seen God but when they love each other then the love of God becomes visible among them.

v. 13-16 The believers can know that they live in Christ and Christ lives in them because they have His Spirit. John and the apostles have seen Jesus and can testify that God sent Him to be the Savior of the world. All who acknowledge that Jesus really is the Son of God have God living in them and they live in God. They can know and rely on (trust) the love God has for them.

Again John says, "God is love."

believers live in love = believers live in God = God lives in them

v. 17-18 In this way love is made complete among them so they will have confidence on the day of judgment. There's a practical application to this and it applies to the final judgment. There is no fear in love. Perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment. The believers do not need to fear judgment because Christ has taken the punishment for their sins. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

v. 19-21 It was God who initiated the love. He loved the believers before they loved Him. In fact John says they love because He loved them. Someone who claims to love God but hates his brother is a liar. That is, he's lying about loving God because anyone who does not love his brother cannot love God either. It is commanded for believers to love one another. This is not optional.
