Revelation
Revelation 6:1-8:2

We've already examined the letters to the seven churches and John's spectacular vision of the throne of God and of the Lamb. The heavenly realm is occupied by four living creatures, 24 elders, a multitude of angels, and perhaps other living beings that John did not mention. This great throng praises the Lamb who sits on the throne. They sing a new song that tells of His worthiness to receive power, wealth, wisdom and honor because of His great sacrifice which "purchased men for God." Only the Lamb is worthy to take the scroll from God's hand and open it. Now we'll read chapters six and seven to see what is written in that scroll with the seven seals.

6:1-8

Seal 1: The first living creature says, "Come." A white horse appears whose rider has a bow and a crown. He rides out "as a conqueror bent on conquest."

Seal 2: The second living creature says, "Come." A red horse appears whose rider has a large sword. He takes peace from the land and makes men kill each other.

Seal 3: The third living creature says, "Come." A black horse appears whose rider is holding a pair of scales. John heard a voice saying that small amounts of grain cost a day's wages and oil and wine were not for sale.

Seal 4: The fourth living creature says, "Come." A pale horse appears whose rider was named Death and the grave (Hades) followed close behind him.

These are what are commonly called "the four horsemen of the apocalypse." Verse 8 says they are given power over 25% of the earth to kill people by sword, famine, plague and wild animals. If we look at all four horsemen in sequence it's likely that it begins with a leader who rides out to conquer other nations (white horse). This leads to war (red horse), which results in food shortages and famine (black horse). The final result is death (pale horse) and those who die are soon buried in graves (Hades follows close behind). Times of war even affect wild animals. They also suffer from lack of food and are more likely to kill people.

2 Corinthians

2 Corinthians 4:1-5:12

4:1-5 Paul and his coworkers do not lose heart. They refuse to be deceptive or distort the word of God. Rather they proclaim the truth in plain terms that people can readily understand. If their gospel is veiled it's not because Paul is concealing the message. Rather "the god of this age" (Satan) has blinded unbelievers' minds. That's why they can't understand the gospel. Paul preaches Christ, not himself.

v. 6 The reference to "Let light shine out of darkness" comes from God creating light in Genesis 1:3. Just as God created physical light so He also "made His light shine in our hearts to give us the light." What is this light? This light is knowledge-- specifically "the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ."

  • God created physical light.
  • God made His light shine in the hearts of believers.
  • Light is knowledge (knowledge of the glory of God). Light is not a feeling.
  • The glory of God is revealed in the (literal) face of Christ

In other words, the light that shines so brightly in Paul is this knowledge of the all-surpassing glory of God that is revealed in the physical incarnation (the physical face) of Christ. Those who turn to Christ are those who believe that He is God in the flesh and that His physical death and resurrection make them righteous in the sight of God. This knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ removes the "veil" of spiritual blindness.

Since ancient times the Bible has been read aloud to groups of people who were eager to hear the words of Life. We're really no different today. Believers still look to the Bible for wisdom and instruction. We belong in the Word together. Thank you for your participation in these classes. I hope you will pass this email on to others and invite them to attend a Bible study.

Grace and peace,

Revelation 6:1-8:2

6:9-11

Seal 5: There is an altar before God's throne. Under that altar John saw the souls of people who died as martyrs. These souls called out in a loud voice to the Lord asking Him to avenge their deaths. They ask how much longer it will be before He judges the world. Each one is given a white robe and told to wait a little longer. What are they waiting for? For the rest of the martyrs to be killed.

v. 12-17

Seal 6: A great earthquake occurs that causes the sun to look black, the moon to turn red, and the stars to fall from the heavens. Mountains and islands are moved. The sky rolls up like a scroll and all the people, great and small, tried to hide in caves and among the rocks. What does this mean? Perhaps a massive earthquake or series of quakes moved large mountains and caused islands to sink into the sea. The resulting dust and ash in the atmosphere could darken the sun and make the moon look red. The changes in the sky could make it look like the sky has rolled up like a scroll. Whether these events are literal or figurative, the most interesting part of this cataclysmic event is that the people know what's going on-- they know this is judgment from God. They try to hide from Him who sits on the throne and from the Lamb because they know that this is His wrath and say, "For the great day of their wrath has come and who can stand?"

7:1-8 After the sixth seal John saw "four angels standing at the four corners of the earth." Their job was to hold back the four winds of the earth. A fifth angel came from the east and told the four angels not to harm the earth until he put a seal on the foreheads of God's servants. Those who were to receive this seal were 12,000 from each of the 12 tribes of Israel; 144,000 in all. Notice that these are all from the tribes of Israel.

v. 9-17 Then John looked and saw "a great multitude that no one could count" from every nation-- not just from Israel. These people were wearing white robes and holding palm branches. When the multitude cried out to God and to the Lamb the angels who were standing around the throne fell down and worshiped God. Then one of the 24 elders asked John who these people in white robes are, but John did not seem to know. So the elder told him that these are people who came out of the great tribulation and have washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb. That's why they're before the throne of God serving Him day and night. God spreads His tent over them, caring for them and protecting them from hunger, thirst and the scorching heat of the sun. The Lamb will be their shepherd and lead them to "springs of living water.' God Himself will wipe away their tears.

So we see that there are two groups of people described in this chapter-- the 144,000 of the tribes of Israel and the great multitude who have washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb.

8:1-2

Seal 7: This is the final seal. When the Lamb opened it there was "silence in heaven for about half and hour." Remember John's previous description of heaven as a place with thunder, lightening, loud voices that sounded like trumpets, etc. Now, for a short time there is silence. John saw seven angels who were given seven trumpets.

Next time we'll read about what happens when these angels blows their trumpets.

2 Corinthians 4:1-5:12

we and us = Paul and his coworkers in ministry

you = the Corinthian believers.

v.7-9 "Treasure" = the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

"Jars of clay" = the mortal bodies of Paul and his coworkers ("we").

The reason God put a priceless treasure like this knowledge in such fragile human bodies is to show that "this all-surpassing power is from God." It couldn't possibly have come from human beings. Paul and his coworkers have suffered greatly but they carry on.

v. 4:10-5:9

Paul's Physical Body

Paul's Resurrected Body

Live by sight, faith is not needed

Goal: to please the Lord

Goal: to please the Lord

v. 10-12 Paul speaks of his physical body and his resurrected body. The Corinthians too will have resurrected bodies. The emphasis in this section is on the certainty of the resurrection, both Christ's and theirs.

v. 13-18 He quotes Psalm 116 which speaks of hope in the midst of great hardships like those Paul has been suffering. "We believe and therefore speak." Because of Paul's belief in the resurrection he is able to speak. The Corinthians actually benefit from Paul's hardships because when they see God help him in his suffering they become more certain that God will help them too. This makes "thanksgiving overflow to the glory of God." Paul doesn't lose heart because even though his physical body is "wasting away" his spirit is "renewed day by day." He's looking to the unseen future instead of what he presently sees around him. The seen is temporary but the unseen is eternal.

5:1-3 The physical body is referred to as a tent while the resurrected body is a building, or eternal house, in heaven. But Paul's not there yet so he groans. The physical body is compared to the shame of nakedness while the resurrected body is clothed with a glorious heavenly dwelling.

v. 4-5 The mortal, physical body will not simply vanish or be left behind in the grave. It will be "swallowed up by life." Somehow the mortal body is resurrected and enveloped by life. God created them mortal for this very purpose. The Holy Spirit dwells in their mortal bodies as a deposit that guarantees this future resurrection.

v. 6-11 Paul is confident about this. Even though he sees himself in his present state he lives by faith in the coming resurrection which is unseen. Whether he is in the physical body or the resurrected body his goal is the same-to please the Lord. All will appear before the judgment seat and receive what is due them for the good or evil they have done while in the body. Paul sincerely believes that it matters what he does while he's alive in the physical body. He knows "what it is to fear the Lord." That's why he tries to persuade others to put their trust in Him.

v. 11-12 Paul and his coworkers are not pretentious. Whatever they are, it's plain to God and to the Corinthians. He's not trying to brag about himself but he's telling the readers all this so they will be able to boast about him. Apparently there are false teachers in Corinth who are not like Paul. So Paul is arming his readers with something they can use to stand up and "answer those who take pride in what is seen instead of what is in the heart." Those false teachers do not resemble Paul's description of himself as listed above. They are not suffering for the sake of Christ, fixing their eyes on what is unseen, or longing to be away from the body and home with the Lord. Paul is not bragging. He's helping the Corinthians discern and resist false teachers.

Much more next time.
