Romans

Romans 9:30-11:3

9:30-33 Paul says the Gentiles attained righteousness even though they were not pursuing it. But the Jews zealously pursued righteousness by observing the law and yet did not attain it. That doesn't sound fair. How could God give righteousness to pagans who weren't even trying and not give righteousness to His people who were trying very hard? Because His people, the Jews, pursued it by works and not by faith in Christ.

God put a stumbling stone (Christ) in their path. But those who trust in Christ, whether Jew or Gentile, will never be put to shame. That is, they will never be sorry that they trusted Him.

Faith = Belief + Trust. Genuine faith is not just believing that Jesus exists but also trusting that He has done what He said He's done.

10:1-4 Paul sincerely wants the Jews to be saved. This is remarkable given the fact that much of his persecution came from the Jews. He knew they were "zealous for God" but their zeal was not based on knowledge of the righteousness that comes through Christ. The Jews sought to establish a righteousness of their own and did not "submit" to God's righteousness. However it is God who determines how righteousness will come and anyone who tries to establish their own way of righteousness is essentially rejecting God's way of righteousness. Christ is the end (or conclusion) of the law. He is the one to whom the law was leading. Therefore righteousness can now come to everyone, Jew or Gentile who believes.

rtbclassThursday Read-to-Believe Class  1Corinthians

1 Corinthians 1:1-2:16

This letter was written by Paul to believers living in Corinth. The city of Corinth did not have a good reputation. It was known for prostitution and other unsavory activities. This letter is not one of Paul's prison epistles. Paul was known by the Corinthians and he uses this letter to correct some serious problems within the local church. This was actually his second letter to them (he mentions a previous letter in 1 Cor. 5:9).

1:1-3 Paul greets them along with his coworker, Sosthenes; perhaps the same man we saw in Acts 18:17. He is clearly writing to believers, calling them "sanctified in Christ" and "called to be holy." He reminds them that they are part of the larger church.

v. 4-9 God has given them grace in Christ. In Him they have been "enriched in every way." The message Paul originally preached to them was confirmed by the fact that there is a church in Corinth. They have all the spiritual gifts they need and the Lord Himself will keep their faith strong until He returns. God is faithful.

v. 10-17 Paul wants them to agree with one another for there are divisions in this church. Some say they follow Paul, Apollos, Cephas (Peter), or Christ. But is Christ divided? No. Was Paul crucified for them? No. He merely preached the message to them. The power for salvation is only in the cross of Christ.

v. 18-24 Paul divides people into two groups: those who are perishing and those who are being saved.

Those Who Are Perishing

Those Who Are Being Saved

The cross is foolishness

They do not know God

Jews demand signs

Greeks seek human wisdom

Christ- stumbling block to Jews

Christ- foolishness to Gentiles

Cross is the power of God

God saves those who believe

The Gospel is Christ crucified

God calls Jews and Greeks

Christ is the power of God

Christ is the wisdom of God

v. 25 God's wisdom and human wisdom are not equal opposing forces. God's wisdom is immeasurably greater. What Paul is calling "the foolishness/weakness of God" is really the cross. He is not saying God is actually foolish/weak but that what some people regard as foolishness/weakness (the cross) is far greater than even the greatest human wisdom.

Since ancient times the Bible has been read aloud to groups of people who were eager to hear the words of Life. We're really no different today. Believers still look to the Bible for wisdom and instruction. We belong in the Word together. Thank you for your participation in these classes. I hope you will pass this email on to others and invite them to attend a Bible study.

Grace and peace,
Sandy Blank

Romans 9:30-11:

v. 5-13 Paul contrasts a "righteousness that is by law" with the "righteousness that is by faith" in Christ. He doesn't want his readers to look for someone to go into the heavens to bring Christ down (He's already come), or expect someone to go into the grave to bring Christ up (He's already risen from the dead). He is already very near; so near that He is in their hearts and mouths. With their hearts they believe and are justified and with their mouths they confess their faith in Him and are saved. Again Paul says, "Anyone who trusts in Him will never be put to shame." The emphasis is on "anyone." Anyone, whether Jew or Gentile, who trusts Christ will be saved. He is Lord of all.

v. 14-15 Paul asks a series of rhetorical questions here. If we take them in reverse order we see that someone must be sent so they can preach. The preaching leads to hearing, the hearing leads to believing, the believing leads to calling on the Lord, and calling on the Lord ends in salvation. Isaiah 52:7 is also quoted in a rather poetic verse about how beautiful are the feet of one who comes bearing good news.

v. 16-18 But not all the Israelites accepted this good news. Faith comes from hearing the message and the message comes through the word of Christ. But again Paul asks, "Did they (the Israelites) not hear?" According to Paul they did hear. But some did not believe.

v. 19-21 They may have heard but they did not all understand the message. Paul quotes Moses who is speaking for God and says that God intended to make Israel envious and angry by those who are not a nation (Gentiles). Then Paul quotes Isaiah, saying that God was found by a people who didn't even seek Him (Gentiles) and God revealed Himself to people who did not ask for Him (Gentiles). But when God speaks of Israel He says, "All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and obstinate people."

11:1-2 Some of Paul's readers may have thought that if God has brought righteousness to Gentiles then He must have rejected His people, Israel. But Paul says emphatically, "By no means!" Paul is an Israelite himself. He is certain that God did not reject His people even though it may look as though He has.

We'll continue his explanation next time.

1 Corinthians 1:1-2:16

v. 26-29 Paul reminds them that not many of them were wise, influential or of noble birth. God chose ordinary people like them in order to shame the ones who seem to be wise. If God only chose the most gifted or successful people then it would appear that people could work to gain a high level of human achievement and thus be qualified to be called by God. But God actually calls many weak underachievers to show that they are not saved by their own efforts. They are saved only by His mercy.

v. 30-31 It's because of God that they are now in Christ. Therefore, they should boast in the Lord and not in themselves.

2:1-5 Paul reminds them that when he first met them he was sick and weak and fearful. His message was not with "wise and persuasive words" but with the Spirit's power demonstrated through miracles and healings, so that they would put their faith in God's wisdom rather than man's power.

v. 6-10 Paul speaks a message of wisdom among the spiritually mature, that is, to those who have the wisdom of God.

Wisdom of Man

Wisdom of God

Wisdom of this age coming to nothing

Rulers of this age coming to nothing

Rulers didn't understand God's wisdom.

No eye has seen, no ear has heard...

God's secret wisdom

A wisdom that God has hidden

A wisdom God destined for their glory

Wisdom from before time began

Revealed to believers by His Spirit

The Spirit knows the deep thoughts of God

 v. 11-12 One man cannot read the thoughts of another. Each person has a spirit within him that knows his deepest thoughts. In the same way, no one can know the thoughts of God except His Spirit within Him. The point here is that people can't know God's thoughts. But those who have been given the Holy Spirit can know the thoughts of God.

v. 13-14 Paul speaks with words taught by the Spirit and that's why men without the Spirit can't understand him. They think what he preaches is foolish because these things can only be discerned spiritually.

v. 15-16 A man who has been given God's Spirit is capable of judging things rightly. He can't be judged by those who don't have the Spirit because they are unable to judge matters rightly. And no one can instruct the Lord because no one can "know the mind of the Lord" well enough to be able to teach Him. But believers have the mind of Christ. That is, the Holy Spirit within them unites them with the mind of Christ.

Much more on this next time.
