Galatians

Galatians 3:15-29

3:15 Paul uses a familiar example from everyday life; the making of a will. No one "can set aside or add to a human covenant that has been duly established." Once a will is in place its terms are set. The same is true of the covenants made by God.

v.16 God made promises to Abraham and to his seed (Abraham's heir). Paul makes a special point here that the promises were to be passed on to only one "seed" not to many people or "seeds." This is important because Paul identifies that one "seed" as Jesus Christ.

In other words, the promises God made to Abraham are passed down to Jesus.

v. 17 The Law of Moses that came 430 years later does not "set aside" the covenant God originally made with Abraham. The law does not "do away with the promise."

Abraham ------ Law of Moses ------ Abraham's Seed -- Galatians

 promise                law                                                    faith

v. 18 The inheritance must depend on either the law or the promise, it cannot depend on both. Paul states that God gave this inheritance to Abraham through a promise (not through a law).

v. 19-20 If the inheritance could not come through the law then why did God bother giving them the law? "It was added because of transgressions" (sins), but only temporarily. The law was added only "until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come." The mediator of the law was Moses. He could represent the people to God but he could not adequately represent both parties because he was not God. When Jesus came He could serve as a better mediator because He was both human and divine, therefore, He could represent both parties.

rtbclassThursday Read-to-Believe Class  Romans

Romans 8:18-39

Last time Paul told his readers that believers are children of God and this makes them His heirs. They are also co-heirs with Christ. As such they share in everything; not only in Christ's glory but also in His suffering. What did Christ suffer? He was rejected by His own people, mocked, slandered, falsely accused of sin, and many other things. His suffering involved much more than the hours He spent on the cross. Christ was described by the prophets as a man of many sorrows, acquainted with grief. Those who hated Jesus would hate the believers and those who loved Him would love them.

v. 18 The readers' current sufferings are not specified but Paul assures them that the coming glory will far exceed their pain. In class we showed the sufferings as a small dot on the whiteboard and the glory as a very large circle around it. Of course, when we suffer it seems as though the sufferings are the large circle and we don't even think much about some future glory. Paul says this glory is to be "revealed in" them. It's not something far away.

v. 19-22 The physical "creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed." God subjected creation to frustration for a certain length of time. But this was done in the hope that creation would eventually be "liberated from its bondage to decay." Creation itself will be brought into the freedom experienced by the sons of God. Creation has been groaning, waiting for its release from this bondage to decay.

1. Creation was subjected to frustration. (past)

2. Creation groans while it waits for the sons of God to be revealed. (present)

3. Creation will be liberated and brought into the glory of the children of God. (future)

Dichotomy of the Week
A dichotomy divides people into two groups that do not overlap. In other words, it's impossible for a person to be in both groups at the same time. Here's a list of some dichotomies that are found in Paul's epistles:
           "in Adam" or "in Christ"
           "under law" or "under grace"
           "darkness" or "light"

In Romans chapter 7 Paul uses the example of marriage to show that a person is either bound to the law or bound to Christ. Verse 2 explains that by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if he dies she is released from the marriage. Verse 3 goes on to say that if the woman marries another man while her husband is still alive she commits adultery. Paul then completes the example by saying that if the husband dies then the woman is released and can marry again. This was a requirement of the Law of Moses that would have been easily understood by the readers.

Next, Paul shows the believers' real relationship to the Law. Verse 4 says "So my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ." According to Paul the believers' relationship with the law ended with the death of Christ. It's as though the Law had been their husband, they were bound to it. Only death could release them from the law. By dying to the law through Christ they could now be bound to Christ as their new husband. Verse 4 goes on to say "that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God." The believers now "belong to" Christ in the same way a wife belongs to her husband.

The readers knew that you can only be in one legitimate marriage at a time. Therefore, if they try to belong to the law and to Christ at the same time it would be as though they are committing spiritual adultery. Paul makes it clear that the believer is married to Christ, not to the law.

Since ancient times the Bible has been read aloud to groups of people who were eager to hear the words of Life. We're really no different today. Believers still look to the Bible for wisdom and instruction. We belong in the Word together. Thank you for your participation in these classes. I hope you will pass this email on to others and invite them to attend a Bible study.

Grace and peace,

Galatians 3:15-29

v. 21 Paul asks an important question and then answers it. "Is the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Absolutely not!" The Law of Moses does not stand against the promises God made to Abraham. If the law could have made people righteous then Jesus would not have needed to come and die to take away sin.

v. 22-24 "The whole world is a prisoner of sin." But that which was promised to Abraham can now be given through faith in Christ to all who believe. Before faith came they had been "held prisoner by the law." But this was only to last until faith was revealed. The Law of Moses was meant to lead them to faith in Christ. They would then be justified by that faith in Christ.

v. 25 Since faith had already come to these believers Paul says they "are no longer under the supervision of the law." This is a pretty shocking statement coming from a former Pharisee. It's no wonder that many Jews of his day wanted to kill him.

v. 26-28 Paul calls the believers "sons of God through faith in Jesus Christ." It is significant that they have become sons through faith and not through observing the law. By being baptized into Christ they have "clothed themselves with Christ." This has a profoundly unifying effect on them all. So much so, that there is no longer any real distinction between them anymore. It no longer matters if they are Jew/Greek, slave/free, male/female, because they are now all one in Christ.

v. 29 Furthermore, if they are in Christ then they are also counted as Abraham's seed and will share in the inheritance God promised to Abraham.

Romans 8:18-39

v. 23-26 Believers groan inwardly while the wait for their adoption and the redemption of their physical bodies. It is their hope and that for which they were saved. Therefore, they wait for it patiently. In the same way (patiently) the Spirit helps believers in their difficulties and intercedes even when they don't know how to pray. Paul says "the Spirit intercedes with groans that words cannot express." There's a beautiful sense of unity between the creation, the believers, and the Spirit of God expressed here.

1. The creation groans while it waits for the sons of God to be revealed.

2. The believers groan while they're waiting for their adoption as sons.

3. The Spirit groans while He intercedes for the believers.

v. 27 This unity also exists between the Father and the Spirit, for the Father who searches their hearts knows the mind of the Spirit and the Spirit knows the will of the Father.

v. 28-30 God has called people according to His own purpose. He works for the good of those who love Him. Paul says that God foreknew them and predestined them to something very special--to be conformed to likeness of Jesus, His Son. Jesus was the firstborn but there will be many who are called to be His brothers. Whomever God predestined He also called and justified (made them righteous in His sight) and glorified. Paul speaks of glorification in the past tense as though it is already done.

v. 31 There is only one appropriate response to this situation. Paul asks, "If God is for us, who can be against us?" The answer is obvious. If God foreknew, predestined, called, justified and glorified those who have faith in Jesus then there is no one of higher authority who can do anything to change their status as sons of God.

v. 32 And how can the readers be certain that God has really done all this or that He will not change His mind? Because He "did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all." Sending Jesus proves that God will do what He says He will do, that is, bring them to glory.

v. 33-36 Now Paul goes through a series of questions. Who will bring any charge against them? God justifies them. Who can condemn them when Christ who lives forever is interceding for them? Who shall separate them from the love of Christ? Nothing can do that. Psalm 44:22 is quoted here.

v. 37-39 In all things they are "more than conquerors through Him who loved" them. Nothing can separate them from the love of God that is in Christ. Not death or demons, nothing in the future, no powers, no highs or lows, or anything else in all creation. This must have been very comforting to people who were enduring persecution and the ordinary sufferings of life. As usual Paul looks far beyond their present circumstances and takes them to a place high above it all to give them a more God-centered perspective. Knowing the power and purpose of God would give them strength to endure any and all hardships.

Next time we'll begin chapter 9. Keep reading!
