Let's hope this never happens to your company; but occasionally accidents happen, and you should be prepared. Are you prepared for a large leak or even a small leak in a concealed location or even a leak underground? There are steps you need to take if leaks of this nature occur; things like, contact the fire department and other emergency responders and evacuation of personnel in the hazardous area. There is also a piece of equipment that you need in the case of combustible gas leaks. That is the Sensit Technologies combustible gas indicators. The Sensit Gold CGI, Sensit Gold G2, and Trak-It 111a combustible gas indicators not only identify combustible gas leaks but are capable of quantifying the lower explosive limits and optional %Volume and PPM readings. All three units integrate an internal pump so a bar-hole test feature helps to accurately detect and locate underground gas leaks. In the case of gas leaks, you want to be sure that nothing can happen to cause an ignition source which may lead to an explosion or combustion of the leaking gas. Emergency responders will want to control the leak as best as possible, and they will want to do it making sure no one is working in the LEL to UEL area of the leaking gas. The LEL and UEL are the lower and upper explosive limits of propane. The LEL is 2.1% in atmosphere and the UEL is a range of 9.5 to 10.1% in atmosphere.
